Reference 166.037 SP belongs to the compact, date-equipped side of the late-1960s Seamaster range. Its 34 mm stainless steel case contains the automatic caliber 565, while the dial combines a silver sunburst finish, applied hour markers and a framed date at three. The strongest examples preserve that contrast without spotting, staining or softened case edges.

The choice is narrower than it first looks. Prioritise a clean, correctly printed dial and defined case geometry over a signed bracelet, because either bracelet format can be changed while a redial or rounded lug cannot be reversed. Seamaster De Ville watches also appear in the accompanying photography, but the specifications and buying guidance here apply solely to 166.037 SP.

    The model landscape

The known production span for 166.037 SP is 1968-1969, and the stable specification is a steel case, automatic caliber 565 and date display. Silver sunburst dials occur with applied markers, including examples with black inserts. Handsets are less uniform among watches handled: both stick and dauphine forms have appeared, so the hands alone cannot establish originality without agreement from the dial, lume and date.

Bracelet configuration should not decide the purchase. The reference has appeared on a beads-of-rice bracelet and on a signed mesh bracelet, but without documentation it is unsafe to claim that either bracelet left the factory with a particular watch. A bracelet can be period-correct without being original to that example. The dial and case carry the harder-to-replace value.

    On the wrist

At 34 mm excluding the crown, 166.037 SP keeps its weight and visual emphasis close to the dial. Applied markers and black inserts sharpen the silver surface, while the framed date at three adds an asymmetry that is immediately visible. The diameter suits a cuff, but the watch also needs a strap or bracelet proportioned to the case - wide, heavy fittings can overwhelm its short visual footprint.

Caliber 565 makes the date practical for regular use, but present performance must be assessed watch by watch. Rates recorded on individual examples do not establish the condition of another movement, and the service history is often unknown. Water resistance should likewise remain unassumed unless the specific watch has a current pressure-test result.

    What goes wrong

A refinished dial is the costliest mistake because the silver sunburst surface, applied logo, date frame and outer lume plots must all remain coherent. Dark spotting or staining across the silver field matters more than isolated micro-dust under magnification. Hand oxidation is common enough to demand attention, especially where the metal surface has dulled differently from the applied markers.

Case polishing removes definition from the lugs and softens the transition into the case sides; no later service restores the lost steel. Bracelet stretch affects both beads-of-rice and mesh fittings differently, while replacement crowns can be period-correct rather than original. Lead with the worst fault. Between a cleaner bracelet and a cleaner dial at the same level, take the dial.

What to check before you buy

    • Dial construction: A correct known configuration has a silver sunburst surface, applied Omega logo, applied hour markers and a framed date at three. Flat paint, uneven sunburst texture or printing that conflicts with the applied furniture supports a redial diagnosis.
    • Hands and lume: Handled watches have shown both stick and dauphine hands, so handset shape alone is not decisive. Compare the hands' black inserts or luminous material with the outer dial plots, and treat mismatched ageing as evidence requiring explanation.
    • Case and caseback: The case should be stainless steel and measure 34 mm excluding the crown, with a Seamaster hippocampus medallion on the back. Soft lug transitions indicate polishing, while an incorrect back can point to a married case.
    • Movement: The movement must be an automatic Omega caliber 565 with 24 jewels. A correct caliber does not authenticate the complete watch by itself, since genuine movements can be installed in cases and dial configurations that never left the factory together.
    • Date display: The dial has a framed date aperture at three o'clock. The frame should sit cleanly within the sunburst surface, and disagreement between its finish, the dial furniture and the surrounding print can expose a service dial, redial or franken assembly.
    • Bracelet fitment: Beads-of-rice and signed mesh bracelets are both known on this reference, but signatures do not prove original fitment. Check for stretch, mismatched end fittings and a fit that overwhelms or sits poorly against the 34 mm case.
