Omega Seamaster 166.010 - What to Buy and What to Avoid

The Seamaster 166.010 combines a stainless-steel case with an automatic movement and a restrained silver dial, placing it between a formal watch and a more substantial everyday design. Caliber 565 is the movement found most often in the watches handled, while caliber 564 belongs to the Chronometer-signed version. Both movements use 24 jewels.

Production covered at least 1963-1970. The reference retained its applied faceted indices and sunburst treatment through that period, so the buying decision is less about chasing a single year than matching the dial, movement and case correctly. A Chronometer dial paired with caliber 564 makes sense; the same wording over caliber 565 needs explanation rather than enthusiasm.

At 34-35 mm excluding the crown, the 166.010 wears compactly, but its sweeping lugs keep it from reading like a round dress watch. The one-millimetre variation matters less than case definition: crisp lug edges give the watch structure, while repeated polishing makes the same diameter look softer and smaller.

The silver sunburst dial is legible through contrast rather than scale. Applied faceted indices with black inserts break up the pale surface, although heavy green, grey or stardust spotting can reduce that clarity. A Beads of Rice bracelet suits the mid-century proportions, but the reference also works when the bracelet is absent because the case does not depend on end links for its shape.

Dial damage is the largest value fault. Some examples carry scattered spotting; others have heavy stardust or raindrop texturing across the full silver surface. Even ageing can be accepted as visible damage with character, but a redial should trade at a wider discount because the original sunburst surface, applied furniture relationship and printing have been replaced.

Polishing is the next permanent loss. Soft lug edges and blurred transitions make the sweeping case look swollen, while deep marks cannot be removed without taking more steel with them. A Beads of Rice bracelet can develop stretch, and replacement crowns or crystals may be period-correct without being original. None of those faults should be hidden behind an unqualified claim that the watch is all original.

Movement condition cannot be settled by a listing that says serviced. A dated invoice identifies the work; without one, the service history is unknown. Caliber 564 or 565 should match the dial designation, and a movement or case taken from another watch makes the result married even if every component is genuine Omega. A combination that never shipped together is franken.
