How do I tell if my vintage Omega Seamaster is real?
Your Seamaster is credible only when its serial date and physical components tell one coherent story, while the dial shows no redial or false branding.

Start with coherence, not one logo: the approximate movement date must make sense beside the case, dial and claimed Seamaster family. A genuine Omega movement alone cannot prove that the complete watch left the factory in its present form.
The decisive risks are a redial, a married case and movement, or a franken assembled from genuine parts that never shipped together. A service dial can be genuine Omega and still be a later replacement, so it should be described and valued differently from an original dial.

The answer in depth
Date the movement first, then test the rest of the watch against that period. For example, a serial around 24,000,000 indicates approximately 1966, with a tolerance of one to three years. The case construction, dial style and Seamaster branding should make sense for that broad date rather than merely looking old.
The dial carries the greatest financial risk. A redial can sit above a genuine Omega movement and inside a genuine case, yet it changes what the watch is worth more than ordinary wear. Uneven text, an implausibly clean surface beside aged hands, or lume that does not agree across dial and hands are reasons to stop treating the watch as an untouched example.
Replacement crowns, crystals and gaskets are consumables and do not make a Seamaster fake. A service dial is also different from a redial: one is a genuine factory replacement, while the other has been refinished outside the factory. The description should separate those categories plainly.
Common mistakes
Do not let the movement settle the whole case. Genuine Omega parts can be combined into a married or franken watch, and the resulting watch may still run properly. The case and movement must belong together, while the dial must suit both the date and the specific Seamaster family being claimed.
Condition can expose alteration without proving outright fakery. Soft or mushy lugs indicate polishing, plating worn through at the lugs cannot be returned by servicing, and a replacement crown may be period-correct without being original. Those faults affect the premium even when the underlying watch is genuine.
Where the watch leaves uncertainty, the seller becomes part of the decision. Accurate disclosure of a service dial, relume, polishing or a replaced crown matters more than a blanket claim of being all original. We treat evasive wording around the dial or mismatched dates as a reason to walk away.
Dating and serials
Omega serial dating gives an approximate production year, not a verdict on the complete watch. Allow a tolerance of one to three years and reject combinations that require the dial, case or family identity to come from a plainly incompatible period.
Serial dating reaches only the rows shown below. It cannot establish that the Seamaster signature was printed by Omega, that the movement began life in this case, or that later parts were disclosed. Those conclusions depend on the physical agreement of the complete watch.

Dating data comes from our decoder tables; treat years as approximate.
What to check before you buy
- Dial status: Treat an original dial, a genuine Omega service dial and a redial as three different categories. Inconsistent ageing between the surface, printing, hands and lume is a warning, not a verdict by itself.
- Case and movement pairing: The approximate movement date must suit the case and claimed Seamaster family. A genuine Omega movement in an unrelated case creates a married watch rather than an authentic complete example.
- Serial date: Use only the serial table's approximate year and allow one to three years either way. A plausible date supports further examination, while a clear period conflict can expose replacement or combined parts.
- Case wear: Soft lugs, lost chamfers and plating worn through at the lug edges record polishing or wear. These faults do not prove fakery, but they permanently reduce the premium and must be described accurately.
- Replacement parts: Separate consumable replacements such as the crown, crystal and gaskets from identity-changing work. A period-correct part can suit the watch without being original, while undisclosed relume or a redial affects value directly.
