Dial and Hands
The exceptionally clean and attractive silver sunburst dial is well preserved, offering a beautiful backdrop for the applied gold-tone indices. Printed text remains crisp and intact across the surface, while the distinct 6 o'clock day window displaying Japanese Kanji characters and the date window are both remarkably clean. The original gold-tone dauphine hands exhibit minor age-related patina, showing light oxidation and micro-spotting under magnification, though their shape and finish remain generally well defined.
Case and Crystal
The gold-plated case presents honest wear consistent with its age, showing moderate scratches and use marks throughout. Plating wear, degradation, and tarnishing are visible on the lug edges and case flanks. The distinctive gold-tone fluted bezel shows some softening of its edges alongside light scratches and minor plating wear. A recessed crown is positioned at 4 o'clock. The caseback engravings remain clear and legible. A domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, remaining clear with no major scratches or cracks visible, providing a distortion-free view of the dial.
Movement
Inside beats the 26-jewel automatic caliber 6206B, featuring gold-colored movement plates and a matching rotor. The movement presents a generally clean appearance with minor surface marks and no obvious severe corrosion visible. Engravings including Seiko, 26 Jewels, 6206B, and Japan are clearly marked on the plates. Timegrapher: +23+25s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a casual black leather strap featuring white and yellow contrast stitching. The strap appears lightly used and pairs comfortably with the gold-tone case.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The gold-plated case shows honest wear with moderate scratches and visible plating wear along the lug edges and flanks. The fluted bezel exhibits some softening and light surface wear. Conversely, the silver sunburst dial remains exceptionally well preserved with clean indices and crisp text. The hands show minor oxidation and micro-spotting. Supported by the timegrapher results, the automatic movement is running strong and steady.
Dimensions
The case measures 37 mm in diameter, excluding the crown.
Remarks
This Seikomatic offers a fantastic 1960s aesthetic with its fluted bezel and neatly integrated recessed crown. The exceptionally clean dial and unusual 6 o'clock Kanji day display make it a highly enjoyable daily wearer for any enthusiast of Japanese watchmaking.
History
The Seikomatic line represents an important era of automatic watchmaking for Seiko during the 1960s. Positioned as a reliable, high-quality automatic timepiece for the modern professional, the Seikomatic family introduced sophisticated designs and robust movements to a wider audience. The caliber 6206 is particularly notable for its day and date complications, often featuring the day window at the 6 o'clock position, which provides a highly symmetrical and pleasing dial layout. These timepieces remain highly appreciated by collectors for their classic proportions, dependable mechanics, and distinctly Japanese design language.
