Dial and Hands
The dial is in excellent vintage condition, presenting a vibrant green gradient or fumé finish that is exceptionally well-preserved. The applied faceted hour markers and Seiko LM logos remain clean and bright, while all printed text is crisp and fully intact. There is no visible moisture damage, spotting, or significant degradation. The baton hands feature central white stripes and show minor surface oxidation and light wear under macro inspection, visually consistent with the watch's natural aging. A highly desirable English and Kanji day-date window sits at the three o'clock position.
Case and Crystal
The tonneau-shaped stainless steel case is presented in honest vintage condition, featuring brushed upper surfaces contrasting with polished flanks. It displays moderate surface scratches and handling marks consistent with normal wear, though the edges remain reasonably defined without severe rounding. A smooth polished bezel ring secures the distinctive multi-faceted crystal, which shows some light surface scratches and minor edge wear. Crucially, the facets remain sharp and clear, with no major chips or deep cracks, creating striking visual depth and distortion over the dial. The partially recessed, unsigned crown features a coin edge that exhibits normal wear.
Movement
Inside is the 25-jewel automatic Caliber 5606A, manufactured by the Suwa Seikosha factory. The movement's visual condition is fair; while there are no obvious missing components, the finish is visually degraded. There is significant dark spotting and staining visible across the winding rotor, with similar spotting present on the movement plates. The rotor is engraved with Seiko, 25 Jewels, and Japan 5606A. Despite the cosmetic aging, the movement is performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. The timegrapher records a rate of +30+35s/day.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original signed stainless steel multi-link bracelet. It features endlinks stamped XAB 381 and a clasp clearly signed SEIKO LM. The bracelet displays moderate surface scratches and normal stretch for its age, providing a comfortable fit for a maximum wrist size of 17.5cm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The dial is exceptionally well-preserved, standing out as a true highlight with its vibrant green finish and clean markers. The case and original bracelet show honest, moderate surface scratches and normal wear expected from a 1970s timepiece. The faceted crystal exhibits light scratches and minor edge wear but remains structurally sound and visually sharp. The movement shows significant cosmetic spotting and staining on the rotor and plates, though it continues to run strong and steady.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in diameter (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Lord Matic is a superb representative of 1970s Seiko design, defined by its highly sought-after green gradient dial and distinctive geometric faceted crystal. Complete with its original signed bracelet and a desirable English/Kanji day wheel, it delivers tremendous wrist presence and distinctive vintage character.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Seiko Lord Matic series was positioned as a premium offering just below the prestigious King Seiko and Grand Seiko lines. Powered by the reliable Caliber 5606 produced by the Suwa Seikosha factory, the LM models were known for their distinctive case geometries and advanced automatic movements. A defining feature of certain 1970s Lord Matic models was the heavily faceted crystal, cut in geometric patterns to create dynamic visual depth over brightly colored dials. Today, finding these models with their period-correct crystals intact makes them highly sought-after by collectors of classic Japanese horology.
