Dial and Hands
The silver sunburst dial is exceptionally clean and vibrant for its age, presenting a beautifully preserved finish. The applied gold-tone indices and Seiko logos remain clean, while all printing is crisp and fully intact, showing minimal signs of aging or spotting. The original gold-tone dauphine hands retain their proper shape and form, exhibiting visible surface oxidation and spotting under magnification that is entirely expected for a timepiece of this era.
Case and Crystal
The gold-plated case displays honest wear consistent with age, retaining generally defined lines. The smooth gold-tone bezel is integrated with the case and shows scratches and minor wear. The case exhibits moderate scratches and handling wear throughout, with some plating degradation and green oxidation visible on the reverse side of the lugs. The recessed crown, positioned cleanly at 4 o'clock, shows some plating wear. The domed acrylic crystal remains free of major cracks or deep chips, presenting only light surface scratches and scuffs visible at certain angles.
Movement
Powering the watch is a Seikosha-signed automatic movement. The caliber appears generally clean with minor surface marks, and the rotor and bridges show no severe corrosion or damage. The timegrapher records a rate of +29s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is paired with a complementary modern black leather strap featuring contrast stitching. The strap shows light wear and creasing from previous use.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The watch exhibits honest wear consistent with its 1964 production. The dial is exceptionally well preserved, while the hands show expected age-related oxidation. The gold-plated case presents moderate scratches, handling wear, and visible plating degradation with green oxidation on the underside of the lugs. The movement is running strong and steady.

Remarks
This Sportsmatic offers a beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial paired with the classic early Seiko 5 configuration. The recessed crown at 4 o'clock provides a streamlined profile, making this a highly wearable piece of early 1960s design.
History
Introduced in the early 1960s, the Sportsmatic was instrumental in establishing the legendary Seiko 5 philosophy. Designed to offer robust reliability, the collection was defined by core attributes including automatic winding, a day-date display, and a recessed crown positioned at 4 o'clock to emphasize self-winding convenience. The Seikosha movement markings on this 1964 example reflect the earlier era of Seiko's manufacturing, representing a foundational period for a model line that remains celebrated by collectors worldwide.
