About This Watch
Offered in this auction by Second Vintage
A classic example of Seiko's expressive 1970s design language, this 5 Actus SS commands attention with its striking red textured dial and distinctive faceted crystal. Fully preserving its original factory configuration, including the signed stainless steel bracelet, this piece highlights the adventurous aesthetics of Japanese watchmaking during a highly creative era.
Brand: Seiko
Model: 5 Actus SS
Reference Number: 6106-7690
Serial Number: 3D2222
Movement: Automatic Caliber 6106C
Dial: Red textured with applied silver-tone indices
Case Size: 37 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Year: 1973
Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -48-50s/day, running in operational condition.
Dial and Hands
The watch features a vibrant and well-preserved red textured, faceted dial surface that catches the light beautifully. It is detailed with applied silver-tone indices, crisp printed text, and a framed day and date window positioned at 3 o'clock. There is no significant staining or moisture damage visible on the dial. The baton style hands feature luminous material and display visible, expected age-related oxidation on the metal surfaces, while the lume shows consistent aging.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features polished and brushed surfaces with visible transitions, presenting honest vintage wear. It retains its preserved overall geometry while displaying moderate scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use, with no major deep dents. A smooth polished bezel integrates well with the case design and shows light wear matching the rest of the watch. The recessed, unsigned crown at the 4 o'clock position displays normal wear. The distinctive faceted mineral crystal exhibits multiple scratches and scuffs across its surface, along with some minor edge wear and flea bites.
Movement
Powered by the automatic Seiko caliber 6106C, the movement features 25 jewels and bears engravings for Seiko and Japan. Visually, the rotor and movement plates display heavy spotting, staining, and oxidation, resulting in a degraded surface finish, though there are no obvious missing parts. Timegrapher: -48-50s/day. Running in operational condition. Maintains the authentic mechanical character of the watch.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original signed stainless steel link bracelet. The clasp is clearly signed 'SEIKO 5ACTUS' and the endlinks are stamped 'XJA260'. The bracelet displays moderate scratches and wear on the links and clasp, providing a maximum wrist fit of 18cm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The red textured dial remains exceptionally vibrant and well-preserved. The original hands exhibit visible metal oxidation and aged luminous material. The stainless steel case displays honest wear with moderate scratches and scuffs, preserving its structural geometry. The heavily faceted crystal shows multiple surface scratches and minor edge wear. Visually, the movement components show heavy oxidation and staining. The original signed bracelet presents normal wear consistent with the case. Supported by timegrapher data, the movement is running in operational condition.
Dimensions
The case measures 37 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Seiko 5 Actus SS is a charismatic representation of bold 1970s styling. The combination of the vibrant red textured dial, the original faceted crystal, and the factory-signed bracelet makes this a highly characterful piece of Japanese watchmaking ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s and flourishing through the 1970s, the Seiko 5 Actus line was created primarily for the Japanese Domestic Market, targeting a younger, style-conscious demographic. The SS designation often denoted models equipped with hacking movements, elevating them slightly above the standard Seiko 5 offerings. Known for their adventurous case geometries, deeply textured dials, and faceted crystals, these watches captured the dynamic and experimental design ethos of the era. The caliber 6106 is a robust automatic movement from Seiko's golden age, providing reliable performance and setting a mechanical foundation for decades of subsequent innovation.
