Dial and Hands
The silver sunburst dial is a striking focal point, catching the light beautifully and highlighting the applied gold-tone Seiko Sportsmatic 5 badge. Faceted gold-tone baton indices provide excellent legibility and depth, perfectly complemented by the sharp dauphine hands. The dial text, including the elegant "Deluxe" script and the "WATER 30 PROOF" designation, remains crisp and fully intact. A framed day-date aperture sits cleanly at the three o'clock position. Condition-wise, the dial is exceptionally well-preserved for its age, showing only light, even aging and very faint, localized spotting near the outer edges that does not detract from its highly attractive vintage presence.
Case and Crystal
The 37 millimeter gold-plated case features a classic profile with gracefully sweeping lugs and a recessed crown at the four o'clock position, maintaining the seamless silhouette characteristic of the Sportsmatic line. A dedicated pusher for the date quickset is positioned just above the crown. The case exhibits honest, age-consistent wear, with visible softening and brassing along the sharpest edges of the lugs and bezel, indicative of regular enjoyment over the decades. The stainless steel snap-on caseback is clearly engraved with the serial number and remains in excellent shape. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal that offers clear, unobstructed views of the dial with only minimal surface wear.
Movement
Inside beats the Seiko caliber 7606A, a robust 23-jewel automatic movement known for its durability and efficient winding. The rotor features the signature red "Seiko Sportsmatic" text, and the movement plates present cleanly with appropriate vintage patina, showcasing the mechanical craftsmanship of the era. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances, running strong and steady. The timegrapher indicates a variance of -28 to -33 seconds per day.
Strap
The timepiece is paired with a period correct dark brown crocodile-embossed leather strap, featuring contrasting edge stitching and a gold-tone pin buckle. The strap shows light creasing and signs of wear but remains supple and complements the warm tones of the gold-plated case beautifully.
Condition
Graded in good vintage condition, this piece showcases a beautifully preserved dial alongside a case that bears the authentic marks of its history. The gold plating shows expected thinning and edge wear, while the dial and hands remain remarkably crisp. The movement is operational and visually clean, making this a highly wearable and charming classic.
Dimensions
Case width measures 37 millimeters excluding the crown.
Remarks
