Dial and Hands
The beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial is exceptionally clean and attractive. The applied gold-tone indices remain bright, complementing the crisp and fully intact printed text. There is no significant spotting or moisture damage visible. The gold-tone dauphine hands match the indices, presenting in honest condition with minor surface scratches and slight oxidation visible under macro inspection.
Case and Crystal
The 36mm gold-plated case features a stainless steel caseback and a recessed crown at the 4 o'clock position. The well-worn case exhibits significant plating degradation, with heavy plating loss and brassing visible on all four lugs and along the edges of the thin fixed bezel. Scratches and handling marks are present throughout the case flanks. The caseback shows typical light scratches while retaining legible engravings. The domed acrylic crystal is clear, displaying only minor surface scratches consistent with its age and material.
Movement
Inside is the in-house Seiko caliber 6619A, a 21-jewel automatic movement featuring a Kanji day wheel. The movement appears generally clean with its rotor intact and no obvious severe corrosion visible. Engravings for Seiko and the jewel count are clearly marked. The timegrapher reads +30+33s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring a crocodile pattern, presented in good wearable condition with light wear.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The dial is excellently preserved, while the case shows honest, heavy wear with notable plating loss and brassing on the lugs and bezel. The hands display minor oxidation, and the crystal has light surface scratches. Supported by the timegrapher data, the movement is running strong and steady.
Dimensions
The case measures 36mm in diameter (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Sportsmatic 5 offers an exceptionally clean dial combined with the charm of a Kanji day wheel. It represents an accessible and authentic entry into 1960s Japanese horology with a robust in-house caliber.
History
Introduced in 1964, the same year as the Tokyo Olympic Summer Games, the Seiko caliber 6619A is a self-winding movement that helped establish the enduring legacy of the Seiko 5 line. Designed without manual winding or hacking capabilities, the movement relies entirely on the efficiency of its automatic winding system. Interestingly, the 21-jewel 6619A includes three non-functional blind jewels on the dial side, a distinctive period addition likely intended to elevate its market positioning above standard 17-jewel calibers of the era. The Sportsmatic 5 remains a fundamental model in mid-century Japanese watchmaking.
