    About This Watch

Presented for auction by Second Vintage The early 1960s represented a golden era for Japanese horology, a period where technical ambition met refined mid-century design. The Seiko Cronos Sea Horse stands as a testament to this pivotal chapter, emerging from the esteemed Daini Seikosha factory. Designed to offer both the elegance of a premium dress watch and the practical durability of enhanced water resistance, the Sea Horse line was a crucial step in Seiko's journey toward robust everyday timepieces. This particular example showcases an incredibly well-preserved case and a dial that has aged with tremendous character, offering collectors a pure, unadulterated glimpse into Seiko's storied past. Brand: Seiko Model: Cronos Sea Horse Reference Number: J13032 Serial Number: 410516 Movement: Seikosha 21 Jewels manual wind Dial: Silver sunburst dial with applied faceted indices, displaying even vintage patina and heavily aged lume in the hands Case Size: 35 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Stainless steel Production Year: 1964 Condition: Excellent vintage condition with sharp case geometry and a beautifully preserved caseback Dial and Hands The dial of this Cronos Sea Horse features a subtle silver sunburst finish that plays beautifully with the light. It is adorned with applied, multi-faceted rectangular hour markers, doubled at the cardinal positions of twelve, three, six, and nine o'clock, which provide excellent depth and legibility. The typography is a charming mix of a flowing cursive script for the "Seiko Cronos" and "Sea horse" signatures, contrasted by crisp sans-serif text for "WATERPROOF" and "DIASHOCK 21 JEWELS". Upon close inspection, the dial exhibits a very fine, even scattering of light patina and minor spotting across the surface, an honest and highly attractive characteristic of its age that does not detract from its overall presence. The classic dauphine hands retain their original luminous material, which has aged to a dark, earthy tone, contrasting sharply against the silver dial and confirming the watch's untouched vintage authenticity. Case and Crystal The 35 millimeter stainless steel case remains in highly impressive condition, retaining thick, sharply defined lugs with distinct facets and clean transitions between the brushed and polished surfaces. The smooth polished bezel frames the dial perfectly, while the knurled crown allows for easy winding. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal that presents clearly, showing only faint, superficial signs of careful wear consistent with its vintage nature. Turning the watch over reveals one of its most compelling features. The screw-down caseback boasts an exceptionally crisp and deep engraving of the iconic Seiko Seahorse emblem, surrounded by the clear "SEIKO CRONOS WATERPROOF" and "STAINLESS STEEL J13032" text. Often polished flat over the decades, the preservation of this caseback relief is a significant value driver for collectors. The interior caseback is properly stamped with the serial number and the traditional crane logo. Movement Powering this timepiece is a beautifully finished Seikosha manual wind movement, featuring 21 jewels and Seiko's proprietary Diashock anti-shock system. The movement is visually striking, highlighted by the vibrant red "SEIKOSHA 21 JEWELS" engraving across the primary bridge, which contrasts elegantly against the brushed rhodium-plated surfaces. The visible gears and balance assembly appear exceptionally clean and well-maintained, displaying the robust and precise engineering that defined Daini Seikosha's output during this highly competitive era of Japanese watchmaking. The watch is operational and functioning. Strap The watch is paired with a period-appropriate black textured leather strap, distinguished by prominent beige cross-stitching near the lugs. This strap complements the vintage character of the dial and hands while providing a comfortable and secure fit on the wrist. Condition This timepiece is presented in excellent vintage condition. The case is remarkably strong, showing normal, light handling marks but retaining its factory intended geometry and sharp lug profiles. The dial is highly honest, displaying an attractive and even distribution of vintage patina, while the hands showcase heavily aged, original luminous material. The standout condition of the deeply engraved caseback further elevates the collector appeal of this specific example. Dimensions The stainless steel case measures 35 mm in diameter, excluding the crown, offering a classic and versatile mid-century profile that wears beautifully on the modern wrist. Remarks Finding a Seiko Cronos Sea Horse with such an impeccably preserved caseback and an honest, character-rich dial is becoming increasingly difficult. This piece represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire a mechanically significant and aesthetically stunning example of Daini Seikosha's early waterproof dress watch capabilities. History Introduced in the late 1950s, the Cronos line was the Daini Seikosha factory's answer to the Marvel and Crown models produced by their internal rival, Suwa Seikosha. The Cronos was celebrated for its thin, highly accurate manual wind movement and elegant design. The addition of the "Sea Horse" designation marked Seiko's early efforts to introduce reliable water resistance to their elegant dress watches, utilizing screw-down casebacks to protect the delicate mechanics within. These models laid the groundwork for the robust, go-anywhere timepieces that would eventually make Seiko a global powerhouse in the decades to follow. / Second Vintage SKU: SEI-SCS-0002
