Dial and Hands
The watch features an exceptionally well-preserved dial with a striking layout, defined by the clean day window at six o'clock and the date window at three o'clock. Its clean silver sunburst finish provides a radiant backdrop for the well-preserved applied gold-tone indices. All printed text remains crisp and intact. The gold-tone dauphine hands display honest aging, with visible spotting and surface oxidation apparent under macro inspection, consistent with the age of the timepiece.
Case and Crystal
The gold-plated case exhibits heavily worn plating that reveals the base metal beneath, typical of well-used vintage gold-plated examples. Significant electro gold plating loss is present on the lugs and case edges, alongside scratches and handling marks throughout the surfaces. The smooth gold-tone bezel is integrated with the case and shows plating wear and scratches matching the rest of the exterior. A recessed crown is positioned at four o'clock, also displaying some plating wear. The caseback features clear engravings, including the classic 1960s dolphin motif. The domed acrylic crystal remains clear with no major deep scratches or cracks visible, showing only minor surface wear consistent with age.
Movement
Powered by the in-house Seiko caliber 6206B, this gold-colored automatic movement features 26 jewels. The caliber appears relatively clean with no obvious severe corrosion, though there are some minor surface marks on the rotor. Engravings for Seiko, Japan, and the jewel count are clearly visible. The timegrapher records a rate of -19s-22s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black textured leather strap featuring contrast stitching. A modern strap, it currently shows light wear and pairs handsomely with the vintage dial layout.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The dial remains beautifully preserved, serving as the visual highlight of the watch, while the hands show honest surface oxidation. The case and bezel display significant plating loss, revealing base metal on the lugs and edges, alongside typical scratches and handling marks. The movement is running strong and steady, supported by the recorded timegrapher data.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in diameter, excluding the crown.
Remarks
This Seikomatic offers a distinctive and highly appealing dial configuration with its day display positioned at six o'clock. The excellent preservation of the silver sunburst dial contrasts nicely against the heavily worn case, making it an honest and charismatic 1960s vintage Seiko.
History
The Seikomatic line was introduced in the early 1960s as a premium automatic offering, designed to showcase Seiko advancements in self-winding technology. The caliber 6206 specifically introduced the day-date complication to the Seikomatic family, notably featuring the day window at six o'clock before standardizing the three o'clock position in later models. This era of Seiko production is highly regarded by collectors for its distinctive design language and reliable in-house engineering.
