Dial and Hands
The dial is a masterclass in 1970s Seiko design, featuring a rich, deep aubergine brown sunburst finish that shifts dynamically depending on the lighting conditions. The dial condition is exceptionally clean, showing an impressive level of preservation free from moisture marks, spotting, staining, or print loss. It is adorned with prominent, highly faceted applied silver-tone hour markers featuring white central channels that enhance legibility. The applied Seiko and LM logos at twelve and six o'clock respectively stand proud of the dial surface, catching the light beautifully. A sharply framed day and date aperture sits cleanly at three o'clock, displaying both English and Kanji characters. The matching baton hands retain their sharp edges and bright white central stripes, showing minimal signs of aging and perfectly complementing the indices.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a distinctive, robust cushion profile that perfectly encapsulates the design language of the decade. The case architecture is defined by a striking contrast in finishes, boasting a prominent circular brushed pattern on the flat upper bezel area that transitions abruptly into highly polished, sloping flanks. The lug profiles remain sharp and well-defined, indicating an honest, unpolished condition. The case exhibits normal, age-consistent surface scratches and light handling marks, but retains its strong factory geometry. The watch is fitted with a spectacular faceted crystal, a highly sought-after feature of this era, which creates brilliant optical distortions and light play over the dial. The crystal remains in very good condition, allowing a clear and unobstructed view of the dial beneath.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko caliber 5606A automatic movement, a highly regarded 25-jewel mechanism from the brand's golden era of mechanical watchmaking. The visual inspection of the movement reveals all correct factory engravings, with the caliber number and jewel count clearly stamped on the winding bridge. The winding rotor displays some expected surface patina and spotting typical of these vintage Seiko calibers, while the underlying gears and bridges remain mechanically sound and visually intact. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances, running strong and steady. Timegrapher results show -30-38s/day.
Strap
The watch is presented on its original stainless steel folded-link bracelet, a significant value addition for vintage Seiko collectors. The originality is confirmed by the clearly visible XBA and 120 endlink stamping, as well as the highly desirable folding clasp proudly signed with the embossed Seiko LM logo. The bracelet shows honest surface wear and light stretch consistent with its age and intended use, maintaining a cohesive vintage aesthetic with the case. It is sized to accommodate a wrist up to 18cm.
Condition
This Lord Matic is graded in excellent vintage condition. The absolute highlight of the watch is its stunningly preserved dial, which remains completely free of the spotting or edge degradation often found in watches of this age. The case retains its factory-correct brushing and sharp transitions, showing only honest, superficial wear without heavy impacts. The faceted crystal is clear and well-maintained, and the presence of the original signed bracelet completes this highly collectible package.
Dimensions
The case measures a classic 36 mm in diameter, excluding the crown. The integrated lug design and cushion case geometry provide a substantial yet incredibly comfortable presence on the wrist, with the bracelet accommodating a wrist size of up to 18cm.
Remarks
Finding a Lord Matic that retains both its original faceted crystal and its factory-signed bracelet is becoming increasingly difficult. When paired with a flawless, deeply colored sunburst dial, it elevates the watch from a standard vintage piece to a compelling collector quality example. The architectural case shape and dynamic light play make this a standout addition to any vintage Japanese watch collection.
History
Introduced in 1968, the Lord Matic line was positioned directly below the elite King Seiko and Grand Seiko families, serving as the upper-mid tier of Seiko's mechanical offerings. The series was built around the sophisticated 5600 family of movements, which were so well-engineered that they were eventually adapted for use in King Seiko and Grand Seiko models. The Lord Matic models from the early to mid 1970s are particularly beloved for their adventurous case designs, faceted crystals, and vibrant dials, perfectly encapsulating the bold, forward-looking spirit of Japanese watchmaking during that era.
