Dial and Hands
The dial is a masterclass in mid-century Seiko restraint and legibility, featuring a brilliant silver sunburst finish that catches the light beautifully from every angle. It is appointed with highly polished, faceted applied baton indices, each featuring a distinct black central channel that perfectly mirrors the sharp dauphine hands. The applied "SEIKO" and "LM" logos add excellent depth, while the framed day-date window at the three o'clock position displays a classic Kanji and English day wheel. The dial is in exceptionally clean condition, retaining its radiant factory texture with only the faintest microscopic signs of age visible under macro photography. There is no moisture damage, prominent spotting, or discoloration, presenting a stunningly fresh face.
Case and Crystal
The 36 millimeter stainless steel tonneau case is a superb example of Seiko’s grammar of design, featuring strong, angular lines and excellent proportions. The case retains sharp lug profiles and distinct transitions between the brushed upper surfaces and the highly polished case flanks. Notably, the caseback reveals an "OPEN THRU GLASS" monocoque, or one-piece, case construction, designed to improve water resistance and structural integrity. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal that provides wonderful vintage distortion at the extreme edges while remaining clear and free of significant blemishes over the dial. The case shows honest, light superficial scratches consistent with careful vintage wear, but remains unpolished in its appearance with strong, defined geometry.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko Caliber 5606 automatic movement, a highly regarded 23-jewel mechanism that formed the backbone of the Lord Matic line. Running in vintage operational condition. Maintains the authentic mechanical character of the era. Timegrapher results indicate +60 to +65 seconds per day.
Strap
The watch is paired with a handsome black leather strap featuring contrasting white edge stitching, complementing the black accents found on the dial's hands and indices.
Condition
This Lord Matic is in excellent vintage condition. The monocoque stainless steel case is well-preserved, retaining its factory brushing and sharp angular lines with only age-appropriate handling marks. The silver sunburst dial is a true standout, remaining remarkably clean and vibrant, free of the spotting or edge degradation often seen in watches of this vintage. The hands and applied indices are crisp and highly reflective.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in width, excluding the crown.
Remarks
With its sharp tonneau case, pristine sunburst dial, and integrated monocoque construction, this Lord Matic is a fantastic representation of Seiko's golden age of mechanical watchmaking. The visual harmony between the black-striped hands and indices provides a level of detail that continues to captivate collectors today.
History
Introduced in 1968, the Seiko Lord Matic line was positioned just beneath the prestigious King Seiko and Grand Seiko collections, bringing high-end features to the sophisticated professional. Utilizing the advanced 5600 series of movements, the Lord Matic offered a slimmer profile, hacking, and hand-winding capabilities, which were premium technical achievements for the era. The LM line quickly became a staple of Japanese business attire, celebrated for its robust reliability and exceptionally refined case designs that remain highly influential in modern horology.
