Dial and Hands
The exceptionally clean and attractive silver dial features a well-preserved sunburst finish. It is detailed with applied faceted indices bearing black central stripes, complemented by the applied Seiko and 5 shield logos. The printed text and minute track remain crisp and intact, while a framed day-date window sits properly at the 3 o'clock position. The original baton hands feature black central stripes that match the indices, showing light age-appropriate patina with minor surface oxidation and dust visible under macro inspection. The sweep second hand appears clean.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel cushion case displays honest vintage wear while preserving its original geometry. It features a brushed top with polished flanks, exhibiting moderate surface scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use, alongside some minor dings on the case edges. The caseback engravings remain clear and legible. A recessed, unsigned coin-edge crown is positioned at 4 o'clock, maintaining the streamlined profile of the case. The domed acrylic crystal shows several light surface scratches, particularly near the 9 o'clock edge, but presents no major cracks or chips.
Movement
Powering the watch is the Seiko caliber 5126A, a 23-jewel automatic movement. The movement presents cleanly, with the rotor and bridges showing standard factory finishing and engraved with Seiko, 23 Jewels, Japan, and 5126A. There are no obvious signs of corrosion or heavy moisture damage. Recording +18+20s/day on the timegrapher, it is exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a period correct stainless steel folded link bracelet, stamped 'XCA' and '151' on the endlinks. This vintage folded link bracelet shows normal wear, including moderate surface scratches and expected stretch for its age. It accommodates a maximum wrist size of up to 19cm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The watch displays honest wear typical of its age, with moderate scratches and minor dings on the stainless steel case, while the silver sunburst dial remains remarkably clean and well-preserved. The acrylic crystal bears light scratches, and the period correct bracelet shows expected stretch alongside surface marks. The movement's timegrapher data reflects excellent performance for its era.
Dimensions
The case size is 35 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This 1968 Seiko 5 offers a compelling blend of preserved original geometry and an exceptionally attractive dial. The presence of the applied Daini Seikosha logo and the reliable 5126A caliber make it a highly wearable and historically charming piece of Japanese watchmaking.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Seiko 5 line was designed to offer robust, reliable, and accessible automatic timepieces for everyday wear. The inclusion of the day-date complication, an automatic movement, a recessed crown, and a durable case formed the core philosophy of the model designation. During this era, Seiko's Daini and Suwa factories engaged in friendly internal competition, driving rapid advancements in movement design and finishing. Models produced by the Daini Seikosha facility are particularly appreciated by collectors for their distinct design language and role in establishing Seiko's global reputation for mechanical reliability.
