About This Watch
Now available at auction from Second Vintage
This classic vintage Seiko dress watch is distinguished by its beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial and elegant dauphine hands. The crisp layout and classic proportions showcase the refined aesthetic that defined Seiko's mid-century dress pieces, while the reliable manual wind Seikosha caliber 560 provides a satisfying and highly capable mechanical experience.
Brand: Seiko
Model: Seiko Crown
Movement: Manual wind caliber 560, 19 jewels
Dial: Silver sunburst with applied faceted silver-tone indices
Case Size: 33 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless steel
Production Year: 1960s
Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -15-17s/day, performing remarkably well.
Dial and Hands
The dial is exceptionally clean and well-preserved, featuring a beautiful silver sunburst finish in excellent condition. Applied faceted silver-tone indices catch the light wonderfully, complemented by crisp black printed text reading "Seiko Crown", "Diashock 19 Jewels", and "JAPAN". There is no significant spotting or moisture damage visible on the dial surface. The original matching silver-tone dauphine hands carry an age-appropriate patina, showing surface oxidation and light scratches visible under magnification. In keeping with the elegant dress watch design, there is no luminous material present.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case offers a classic dress watch profile with honest wear. The silver-tone case features straight lugs and a thin polished smooth bezel. Light surface scratches and handling marks are visible on the polished flanks, lugs, and bezel, consistent with the age of the timepiece, yet the case edges remain relatively well-defined. An unsigned knurled crown sits at the three o'clock position, appropriately sized and styled for the model. A clear domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, showing minimal signs of wear with no deep scratches or cracks visible.
Movement
Inside the case resides the manual wind Seikosha caliber 560, a 19-jewel movement. The clean plates show minor surface scratches, with the regulator index clearly visible and no severe corrosion or damage observed. Engravings for "SEIKOSHA", "19 JEWELS", and "560" are proudly displayed on the movement architecture. The timegrapher recorded a rate of -15-17s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a modern black leather strap featuring white contrast stitching. The strap appears unworn or very lightly used, offering a comfortable and stylish complement to the vintage case.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The watch presents an exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial with crisp text and nicely preserved indices, alongside a matching original handset that shows expected surface oxidation. The stainless steel case displays honest wear, with light surface scratches on the polished flanks and bezel, while retaining well-defined edges. The movement is clean and shows no severe corrosion.
Dimensions
The case measures 33 mm in diameter (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Seiko Crown offers an exceptionally clean sunburst dial that beautifully catches the light. The combination of its classic proportions, faceted indices, and reliable Seikosha caliber 560 makes it a highly wearable and attractive dress watch for the discerning enthusiast.
History
Introduced in 1959, the Seiko Crown was designed as a high-precision dress watch intended to surpass the earlier Seiko Marvel line. Produced by the Suwa Seikosha factory, the Crown represents a highly significant period in Japanese watchmaking. The technical advancements and refined design language of the Seiko Crown directly laid the foundation for the first Grand Seiko introduced in 1960. Today, the model remains a foundational piece in Seiko's history, appreciated for its elegant mid-century aesthetic and robust manual wind calibers.
