About This Watch
Now available at auction from Second Vintage
A classic and elegant vintage Seiko dress watch, this J15003 reference presents a beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial that immediately draws the eye. Driven by the respected Seikosha 560 manual-wind movement, this piece offers highly desirable mid-century proportions and represents a significant era in Japanese watchmaking, balancing refined dress aesthetics with enduring mechanical performance.
Brand: Seiko
Model: Crown
Reference Number: J15003
Movement: Manual wind, caliber 560, 21 jewels
Dial: Silver sunburst with applied gold-tone faceted indices
Case Size: 37 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Gold-tone
Production Year: 1960s
Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -7-10s/day, performing remarkably well.
Dial and Hands
The exceptionally clean and attractive silver sunburst dial is well preserved, displaying strong radial brushing that catches the light beautifully. The applied gold-tone faceted indices remain clean and bright, contrasting clearly against the dial surface. All printed text is crisp and fully intact, showing minimal signs of aging or spotting. The original gold-tone dauphine hands exhibit visible surface oxidation and micro-spotting under macro inspection, reflecting expected age-related wear. Consistent with the elegant dress watch style of the period, there is no luminous material present on the dial or hands.
Case and Crystal
The gold-tone case displays honest vintage wear, with visible plating loss noted particularly on the reverse edges, including the perimeter of the caseback and the lug edges. The surfaces show moderate scratches consistent with age and use, and while the lugs retain their general shape, they exhibit softening from wear. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal that remains clear, presenting no major scratches, cracks, or crazing, and providing an unobstructed view of the dial. The unsigned, ribbed crown shows some wear to its gold-tone finish.
Movement
Powering the watch is the Seikosha caliber 560 manual wind movement, featuring 21 jewels. The movement is visually clean, with screw heads and plates appearing well preserved and showing no obvious signs of heavy corrosion. The timegrapher records a rate of -7-10s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is paired with a black leather strap featuring contrasting white and orange stitching. Fastened with a gold-tone pin buckle, the modern strap appears to be in lightly used or near-new condition.
Condition
Good vintage condition. Supported by the recorded timegrapher result, the movement is performing very strongly. The silver sunburst dial remains in exceptionally fine shape, while the original hands display visible surface oxidation and micro-spotting. The gold-tone case shows moderate surface scratches, softening to the lugs, and noticeable plating wear along the lug edges and caseback perimeter.
Dimensions
The case measures 37 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Seiko Crown stands out for its remarkably clean sunburst dial and crisp applied indices. Combined with its classic mid-century proportions and a strong-performing manual-wind movement, it offers a highly compelling option for enthusiasts of early Japanese dress watches.
History
Introduced in the late 1950s and produced into the 1960s, the Seiko Crown was a pivotal model line that helped establish the brand's reputation for precision and refined design. The Crown series laid the mechanical and aesthetic groundwork for the first Grand Seiko models, representing Seiko's dedication to producing elegant, highly capable dress watches during this transformative era of Japanese horology. Standard gold-tone models like the J15003 remain appreciated today for their balanced proportions and historical significance within the Seiko catalog.
