Dial and Hands
The gradient brown, or fumé, dial is exceptionally preserved and visually striking. Its finish remains clean and vibrant, free of any visible moisture damage or spotting. The applied indices and logos are crisp, showing no visible oxidation, and all printed text is fully intact. The original baton hands feature white inserts that perfectly match the indices. Under macro magnification, the hands display minor surface oxidation and micro-scratches, presenting age-appropriate wear that suits the overall character of the dial.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case remains in honest vintage condition, retaining its original architectural lines and distinctive faceted lug geometry. The case features an integrated smooth bezel area rather than a separate component. The brushed top surfaces and polished flanks show normal honest wear, with scratches and minor dings visible on the polished sides and bezel area. The unsigned, partially recessed crown shows normal handling wear. Adding unique visual depth to the watch is the distinctive multi-faceted mineral crystal. The crystal shows several scratches and scuffs, most notably on the lower right facets.
Movement
Powering the watch is the 25-jewel automatic caliber 5606A. The movement appears generally clean and features clear engravings reading "SEIKO", "25 JEWELS", and "JAPAN 5606A". Some minor surface marks and light spotting are visible on the rotor and plates. The timegrapher records a rate of +29+33s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original signed stainless steel link bracelet, properly completing the vintage aesthetic. The clasp is clearly signed "SEIKO LM", and the endlinks are stamped "XLA 160". The bracelet shows moderate surface scratches and normal wear consistent with its age, and it will accommodate a maximum wrist size of 17.5cm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The case retains its sharp faceted geometry despite displaying honest scratches and minor dings on the polished flanks. The gradient brown dial is exceptionally clean and vibrant, while the hands show only minor oxidation under magnification. The original faceted crystal exhibits noticeable scratches and scuffs, particularly on the lower right side. The movement is running strong and steady.
Dimensions
The case size is 36 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Lord Matic stands out through its compelling combination of a vibrant gradient dial and a complex faceted crystal. Retaining its original architectural case lines and original signed bracelet, it represents a sought-after configuration for enthusiasts of 1970s Japanese watchmaking.
History
Introduced in 1968, the Seiko Lord Matic (LM) line was positioned just below the prestigious King Seiko and Grand Seiko collections. Powered by the sophisticated 5600 series of movements, the Lord Matic offered premium features and excellent reliability to the domestic market. By the early 1970s, Seiko began experimenting with more daring designs, introducing heavily faceted cases, colorful gradient dials, and complex cut-glass crystals. These expressive models reflect a unique era in watchmaking when traditional mechanics were paired with bold, futuristic aesthetics.
