    About This Watch

Now available at auction from Second Vintage A classic example of Seiko's mid-century automatic day-date design, this Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe features a highly legible layout and a dedicated date quickset pusher. The well-preserved silver sunburst dial and distinctive recessed crown position highlight the practical yet elegant geometry that defined Japanese watchmaking in the 1960s. Brand: Seiko Model: Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe Serial Number: 5104270 Movement: Automatic, caliber 7606A Dial: Silver sunburst with applied indices Case Size: 37mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Gold-tone, stainless steel caseback Production Year: 1965 Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: +24+28s/day, running strong and steady. Dial and Hands The well-preserved silver sunburst dial features a classic layout with crisp printed text and a day-date complication. Applied indices exhibit some oxidation, and minor age-related spotting is visible under magnification. The original dauphine style hands show moderate oxidation and spotting on their surfaces, while the luminous material appears aged, matching the overall vintage character of the timepiece. Case and Crystal The 37mm gold-tone case presents with a recessed crown positioned at four o'clock and a dedicated pusher at three o'clock for the date quickset. The case and integrated bezel are heavily worn, showing significant plating loss on the flanks, lugs, and pusher, alongside scratches and wear throughout. The stainless steel caseback also displays scratches and wear consistent with age. A domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, bearing minor surface scratches but remaining free of major cracks or chips. Movement Inside is the Seiko caliber 7606A, an automatic movement featuring 23 jewels and a visible rotor. The movement maintains a generally clean appearance, with engravings reading "SEIKO SPORTSMATIC 23 JEWELS" and "7606A" clearly present, alongside some minor surface scratches on the plates. The timegrapher records +24+28s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. Strap The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring an alligator pattern. It shows signs of light wear and complements the mid-century design beautifully. Condition Good vintage condition. The dial remains well-preserved with crisp text and minor spotting visible under magnification. The hands and applied indices display moderate oxidation and aging. The gold-tone case exhibits significant plating loss, particularly on the flanks and lugs, as well as general scratches throughout. The automatic movement is running strong and steady, as supported by the recorded timegrapher results. Dimensions The case measures 37mm in diameter (excluding the crown). Remarks This Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe delivers the fundamental charm of 1960s Japanese horology. The combination of the silver sunburst dial, the day-date complication, and the distinctive recessed crown layout makes it a highly enjoyable vintage piece. History Introduced in the 1960s, the Seiko Sportsmatic 5 line helped establish the design principles that would define the brand's accessible automatic watches for decades. Built around the pillars of automatic winding and a day-date display, the Sportsmatic series offered reliable mechanical performance wrapped in elegant, everyday styling. The Deluxe variants often featured refined dial layouts and dedicated quickset pushers, representing a step up in Seiko's mid-century catalog and remaining popular among collectors of early Japanese automatics.
