This 1972 Omega Constellation presents a sought-after black dial configuration housed within a distinctive 1970s integrated case design. Dial and Hands
The dial is an exceptionally clean and striking deep black, remaining beautifully preserved. All printed text, including the chronometer certification, is crisp and fully intact. The applied indices and the applied Omega logo are clean, creating a sharp contrast against the dark background. The lume plots show consistent aging across the dial. The original hands display moderate oxidation and surface aging, with luminous material that perfectly matches the dial plots, resulting in an age-appropriate and handsome patina. A practical English day-date aperture sits cleanly at the three o'clock position.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case retains its honest vintage wear and original geometry. The brushed finish on the upper surfaces remains visible, while the case flanks and lugs show moderate scratches and handling marks. The edges exhibit some softening consistent with decades of age and wear. The fluted steel bezel is intact; its ridges remain defined but show signs of handling and moderate wear. The watch features a clearly signed Omega crown, with normal wear visible on its knurling. Turning the watch over reveals a clear observatory medallion on the caseback. The flat crystal is generally clear, though it exhibits some light surface scratches visible under direct light.
Movement
Inside is the chronometer-certified Omega Caliber 1021 automatic movement. The copper-colored plating is intact, and the engravings are clear and legible, proudly noting the 23 jewels and adjustments to five positions and temperature. There are noticeable scratches and scuffs present on the rotor surface. The timegrapher records a rate of +30+35s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a period-correct integrated-style stainless steel bracelet. It displays honest wear, with moderate scratches consistent with the condition of the case. The bracelet will comfortably accommodate a maximum wrist size of 17.5cm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The watch wears its history openly, showing moderate scratches and handling marks across the case, bezel, and integrated bracelet, along with expected softening to the case edges. The hands display moderate surface oxidation, and the movement rotor shows visible scratches. The crystal has light surface scratches. Conversely, the black dial is wonderfully preserved, offering a remarkably clean aesthetic. The movement is running strong and steady, supporting the reliable mechanical character of the watch.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Constellation combines a desirable black dial with the undeniable charm of 1970s integrated architecture. The contrast between the deep black dial and the textured fluted bezel creates a commanding profile on the wrist. Powered by a highly adjusted chronometer movement, it is a compelling target for collectors seeking a distinctive and capable vintage Omega.
History
The Omega Constellation was introduced in 1952 to serve as the brand's flagship chronometer, representing the pinnacle of their mass-produced precision watchmaking. By the 1970s, the Constellation line evolved to embrace the bold design language of the era, moving toward integrated bracelets, barrel-shaped cases, and textured bezels. This period also saw the introduction of the 1000-series calibers, designed to offer high-beat accuracy and advanced day-date complications in a slimmer profile. Today, these 1970s integrated Constellations are celebrated for their uncompromising aesthetic and excellent mechanical foundations.
