Dial and Hands
The vertically brushed silvered dial presents a minimalist two-hand layout characteristic of refined dress pieces from the era. It features an applied steel Omega logo positioned above crisp sans-serif printed typography. The hours are marked by slender black painted stick indices which perfectly complement the matching black stick hands. Close inspection reveals honest age-consistent patina, including noticeable speckling across the upper quadrants and subtle discoloration along the lower peripheral edges near the Swiss Made designation. The hands remain well-preserved, showing only minor signs of aging around the central pinion.
Case and Crystal
The 35 millimeter stainless steel cushion case exemplifies 1970s architectural watch design. The case features a pleasing contrast between the polished front bezel and the brushed case flanks. It is fitted with a correctly signed scalloped Omega crown. The case exhibits clear signs of honest vintage wear, with handling marks and superficial scratches visible across the polished surfaces and the vertically brushed snap-on caseback, while retaining its original structural integrity. The crystal remains clear and free of major visual obstructions, providing an unobstructed view of the dial.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Omega Caliber 711, a highly regarded ultra-thin automatic movement. The copper-finished plates and rotor are beautifully preserved, bearing the serial number 36981892, which dates production to approximately 1973. The movement is proudly stamped with twenty-four jewels and adjusted to two positions. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances, running strong and steady, the timegrapher results show a deviation of -30 to -35 seconds per day.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a handsome black leather strap featuring an embossed texture and contrasting white perimeter stitching. The strap is secured with a classic stainless steel tang buckle, complementing the monochromatic aesthetic of the dial and case.
Condition
Presented in good vintage condition. The stainless steel case retains its distinct cushion profile with expected surface scratches and handling marks consistent with decades of use. The dial exhibits visible aging, characterized by distinct speckling and minor edge wear that authenticates its vintage lineage. The movement remains visually clean and operational.
Dimensions
Case width measures 35 millimeters excluding the signed crown.
Remarks
This Omega De Ville is a charming representation of the brand's design language during the early 1970s. The combination of the cushion case, ultra-thin movement, and minimalist dial makes it a versatile vintage dress watch that carries a distinct mid-century modern appeal.
History
Introduced as a standalone collection in 1967 after originating within the Seamaster family, the Omega De Ville line was created to embody urban elegance and refined design. Stripped of the bulkier sports watch features, the De Ville series allowed Omega to experiment with varied case shapes, ultra-thin calibers, and sophisticated dial layouts. Throughout the 1970s, the collection became synonymous with architectural case designs and minimalist dials, securing its place as a cornerstone of Omega's dress watch offerings.
