Now available at auction from Second Vintage This elegant Longines dress watch from the 1970s commands attention through its striking vertically brushed gold-tone dial. Exceptionally clean and well-preserved, the minimalist two-hand layout perfectly complements the classic ultra-thin proportions of the case. Powered by the manual wind caliber L 847.4, this piece delivers a refined and traditional presence on the wrist. Brand: Longines Reference Number: 4164 Serial Number: 53317465 Movement: Manual wind caliber L 847.4, 17 jewels Dial: Gold-tone with a vertically brushed finish and printed black stick indices Case Size: 32mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Gold-tone Production Year: 1970s Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -10-14s/day, performing remarkably well. Dial and Hands The exceptionally clean and well-preserved gold-tone dial features a distinct vertically brushed finish that catches the light beautifully. The printed black stick indices and accompanying text remain crisp and entirely intact, with no visible spotting, staining, or damage to be found. A pair of matching black stick hands completes the minimalist two-hand layout. These hands maintain a clean finish entirely free of visible corrosion or damage, ensuring the display remains crisp and highly legible. Case and Crystal The gold-tone case, fitted with a stainless steel caseback, exhibits honest wear consistent with age. Moderate scratches and handling marks are visible along the case flanks and lugs, while some tarnish and minor plating wear can be seen on the edges and lug tips. A thin, integrated gold-tone bezel frames the dial, showing minor surface scratches that match the character of the case. The watch is fitted with a gold-tone crown, signed with the Longines text and winged hourglass logo, featuring well-defined knurling. A flat acrylic crystal protects the dial, remaining clear with no significant scratches, crazing, or chips visible. Movement Inside the case beats the Longines caliber L 847.4, a 17-jewel manual wind movement. The plates and bridges are clean and bright, displaying no visible corrosion, oxidation, or damaged screw heads. Engravings including the Longines Watch Co Swiss signature and the movement serial number remain clearly defined. The timegrapher recorded a rate of -10-14s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. Strap The watch is paired with a dark brown leather strap. This strap is heavily worn, with noticeable cracking and peeling visible along the edges and inner lining, reflecting significant prior use. Condition Good vintage condition. The watch presents with honest wear to the gold-tone case, including moderate scratches, some tarnish, and minor plating wear along the edges and lug tips. In contrast, the visually striking brushed dial and black stick hands have been exceptionally well-preserved and remain in excellent condition. The acrylic crystal is clear and free of significant marks. Please note that the accompanying dark brown leather strap exhibits heavy wear, cracking, and peeling. Supported by the timegrapher reading of -10-14s/day, the manual wind movement is performing very strongly. Dimensions The case measures 32mm in diameter, excluding the crown. Remarks This Longines offers a superb combination of classic ultra-thin dress watch proportions and a highly legible, minimalist design. The striking brushed dial is a visual standout, while the clean manual wind movement provides reliable mechanical performance. It represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a handsome and honest vintage dress watch from a respected Swiss maker. History Founded in Saint-Imier in 1832, Longines has long been celebrated for producing elegant and mechanically refined timepieces. During the 1970s, the brand continued to master the art of the traditional dress watch even as the industry began shifting toward quartz technology. Pieces from this era often featured ultra-thin profiles and minimalist two-hand layouts, prioritizing clean aesthetics and formal sophistication. The caliber L 847 family was a staple of these slender designs, offering reliable manual wind performance in a compact footprint. This particular example perfectly illustrates the restrained and handsome styling that defined traditional Swiss watchmaking during the decade.
