Now available at auction from Second Vintage
This striking Seiko Lord Matic represents the absolute peak of 1970s Japanese geometric design. With its vibrant emerald green gradient dial and distinctively faceted cut glass crystal, this timepiece captures the bold "Mod" aesthetic of the era perfectly. The Lord Matic series was positioned as a high-grade offering, sitting just below King Seiko in the hierarchy, and this specific reference 5606-5080 combines a reliable high-beat movement with an architectural case shape that makes it a true collector's conversation piece.
Brand: Seiko
Model: Lord Matic
Reference Number: 5606-5080
Serial Number: 2N1129
Movement: Automatic Caliber 5606 (recently serviced)
Dial: Green Gradient with Faceted Crystal
Case Size: 34 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Year: 1972
Condition: Good vintage condition. The watch shows honest signs of age, particularly on the original faceted crystal which has visible scratches and wear, but the dial remains vibrant and the case retains its sharp architectural lines. The recently serviced movement is performing exceptionally well.
Dial and Hands
The dial is the centerpiece of this watch, featuring a deep emerald green sunburst finish that gradients to black at the edges. It is adorned with applied gold block indices that add a touch of warmth against the cool green tones. The gold-tone hands are original and match the indices perfectly. A framed day-date window sits at the three o'clock position, featuring a bilingual English and Kanji day wheel, a desirable feature for collectors. The dial surface appears remarkably clean and free of aging, contrasting with the external wear.
Case and Crystal
The square stainless steel case features a distinct "TV screen" or geometric architecture with sharp, angular lugs that define the 1970s design language. The case surfaces show normal vintage wear with some surface scratches and nicks consistent with age, but the factory brushing and original geometry remain intact. The watch is fitted with its original faceted "cut glass" mineral crystal. Please note that the crystal shows visible scratching and chipping along the faceted edges, which is common for these specific models after five decades of life.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the highly regarded Seiko Caliber 5606 automatic movement. This 25-jewel movement was a tier above the standard movements of the time. The recently serviced movement is running exceptionally well for a vintage piece. Timegrapher testing reveals accuracy between -2 and -4 seconds per day with strong amplitude, which indicates a very healthy movement offering reliable vintage performance.
Strap
The watch has been fitted with a brown leather strap that complements the gold accents on the dial. It features a stainless steel pin buckle and is in clean, ready-to-wear condition.
Condition
This timepiece is in good vintage condition. While the faceted crystal shows evident signs of use including scratches and edge wear, the rest of the watch is well-preserved. The dial is in stunning condition, and the case retains its original sharp definition. The mechanical performance is outstanding for a watch of this vintage.
Dimensions
The case measures 34mm in width excluding the crown. Due to the square case shape, the watch wears larger on the wrist than the dimensions suggest, offering a substantial presence similar to a 36mm or 37mm round watch.
Remarks
The Seiko Lord Matic "Square" with a faceted crystal is becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially with such a vibrant green dial. This watch is a fantastic entry point into the world of funky 1970s horology. It combines the reliability of Seiko engineering with a design that is unapologetically retro. It is a bold statement piece that looks as stylish today as it did in 1972.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Lord Matic (LM) line was Seiko's mid-range luxury offering, incorporating the sophisticated 5606 movement which served as the base for many higher-end King Seiko and Grand Seiko models. The LM line was the playground for Seiko's designers in the 1970s, allowing them to experiment with wild case shapes, colorful dials, and faceted crystals that defined the "Disco Era" of watchmaking.
