This Seiko Lord Matic represents a definitive era in Japanese horology, sitting comfortably in the "sweet spot" of 1970s vintage collecting. The Lord Matic, or LM, was positioned as a high-grade mid-tier offering, utilizing the sophisticated 5606 movement that served as the base for many King Seiko and Grand Seiko models of the period. This specific example features the classic "Grammar of Design" case lines that define Seiko's golden age, combining sharp angles with refined surfaces. With its clean aesthetic and robust engineering, this piece offers a sophisticated entry point into the world of vintage Japanese dress watches.

Dial and Hands
The watch features a classic silver sunburst dial that remains in remarkably clean condition with a crisp radial finish that catches the light beautifully. The dial is adorned with applied baton indices featuring black central inserts which match the slender baton-style handset perfectly. The applied "SEIKO" logo at the twelve o'clock position and the "LM" emblem at six o'clock are sharp and distinct. A framed day-date window is positioned at three o'clock adding both utility and balance to the design layout. The Suwa Seikosha factory symbol is visible just above the six o'clock marker.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case measures 37mm and presents a strong vintage presence on the wrist. The case architecture follows Seiko's distinct design language from the 1970s with polished surfaces and gently curving lugs that hug the wrist. The case edges remain well-defined showing normal signs of use consistent with its age but no signs of abuse. The crystal is clear and allows for excellent legibility of the dial. The screw-down caseback is fully legible displaying the reference and serial numbers clearly along with the water resistance markings.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the highly regarded Seiko Caliber 5606 automatic movement featuring 23 jewels. This movement is famous for its slim profile and was a significant technical achievement for Seiko during the 1970s. The movement surfaces appear clean and well-maintained in the photographs showing no signs of moisture intrusion or corrosion.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring an embossed crocodile pattern. The strap is in good condition and provides a formal contrast to the bright steel case and silver dial making it suitable for both casual and dress wear.
Condition
This timepiece is in excellent vintage condition. The dial is exceptionally well-preserved and free from significant spotting or patina. The case shows honest wear with light surface scratches typical of a watch from 1974 but retains its original geometry without signs of over-polishing. The movement is running within acceptable vintage tolerances with timegrapher readings between +25 and +32 seconds per day.
Dimensions
The case diameter is 37mm excluding the crown making it slightly larger than many standard dress watches of the era and providing a contemporary fit.
Remarks
This 1974 Lord Matic is a prime example of why vintage Seiko has such a dedicated following. It offers the build quality and design language of higher-end pieces at an accessible level. The 5606-7072 reference is particularly desirable for its balanced proportions and clean dial layout.
History
Introduced in 1968 the Lord Matic line was essential in solidifying Seiko's reputation for automated mass-produced high-quality mechanical watches. It effectively replaced the Seikomatic line and sat just below the King Seiko in the corporate hierarchy. The 56 series movement inside was so successful that it continued to be produced well into the 1970s powering millions of reliable timepieces and proving that high precision could be achieved in a mass-market luxury product.
