Dial and Hands
The silver dial is the highlight of this timepiece, featuring the rare and highly collectible "Explorer" configuration with applied Art Deco Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9. The remaining hours are marked by sharp, applied arrowhead indices. The dial surface retains a beautiful vertical brushed sunburst finish that catches the light elegantly. The original Dauphine hands and center sweep seconds hand show a charming, honest patina consistent with their age. The "Omega Automatic" and "Seamaster" scripts are crisp and legible, with the latter showcasing the desirable "coat hanger S" typography.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features the celebrated "Beefy Lug" profile, characterized by thick, downturned lugs that give the watch a substantial and masculine presence on the wrist typically larger than its 34mm diameter suggests. The case edges remain defined, showing normal vintage wear with light surface scratches but no signs of abuse. The case is fitted with an Omega-signed clover crown, a delightful period-correct detail. The acrylic crystal is clear and offers an unobstructed view of the dial.
Movement
Powering this Seamaster is a copper-colored Omega automatic movement, likely the Caliber 501 series, marked with 17 jewels. The serviced movement presents well visually, clean and free of significant oxidation. It is currently running within vintage tolerances, with timegrapher results indicating a very healthy performance of -3 to -5 seconds per day with strong amplitude, offering reliable vintage performance.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a high-quality burgundy leather strap featuring contrasting stitching. The rich color of the leather complements the silver dial and stainless steel case perfectly, adding a touch of warmth and sophistication to the overall aesthetic.
Condition
This timepiece is in excellent vintage condition. The dial is remarkably clean for its age, showing only very minor signs of aging. The case retains its architectural integrity with the lug shape clearly preserved. The caseback marks, including the "Seamaster" and "Waterproof" engravings, are visible though lightly worn, which is typical for a watch of this vintage.
Dimensions
The case measures 34 mm in diameter excluding the winding crown. The substantial lug design provides a lug-to-lug length that enhances the wearing experience, making it suitable for a variety of wrist sizes.
Remarks
This reference 2846 is a quintessential example of why vintage Omegas are so revered. Finding one with the combination of the thick lug case and the 12-3-6-9 dial in such clean condition is becoming increasingly difficult. It is a sophisticated dress watch with sports watch DNA, perfect for the discerning collector.
History
Introduced in 1948 to celebrate Omega's 100th anniversary, the Seamaster line was based on the waterproof wristwatches made for the British military during World War II. It quickly became the brand's best-selling line, renowned for its robust construction and elegant design. The "Beefy Lug" models of the 1950s helped cement the Seamaster's reputation as a versatile watch that was both rugged enough for active wear and refined enough for the boardroom.
