Sobre este reloj
Offered in this auction by Second Vintage
This Seiko Lord Matic Special represents a significant step up in the hierarchy of vintage Seiko collecting, bridging the gap between the standard automatics and the Grand Seiko lines. Powered by the highly regarded 5200-series movement, which later became the foundation for Seiko’s resurrected mechanical high-grade calibers in the 1990s, this piece combines technical prowess with the sharp "Grammar of Design" aesthetics typical of the early 1970s. With its original LM signed bracelet and clean silver dial, it is a sophisticated choice for the discerning collector.
Brand: Seiko
Model: Lord Matic Special
Reference Number: 5206-6060
Serial Number: 155795
Movement: Automatic Caliber 5206
Dial: Silver Sunburst
Case Size: 36 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Year: 1971
Condition: Good vintage condition, showing honest wear consistent with its age and use.
Dial and Hands
The watch features a refined silver sunburst dial that remains in attractive condition. It is adorned with applied silver baton indices featuring black inlays, matching the slender handset for excellent legibility. The distinct "LM Special" logo and the Suwa factory lightning bolt symbol are printed clearly at the 6 o'clock position. A framed day-date window is positioned at 3 o'clock, featuring a Kanji and English day wheel, adding to its domestic Japanese appeal.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case measures 36mm in diameter and retains the sharp, faceted lug design characteristic of the Lord Matic line. The surfaces show normal vintage wear, including scratches and scuffs consistent with a watch of this era. The screw-down caseback is clearly engraved with the reference and serial numbers. The crystal exhibits some haze and scratching visible under angled lighting, typical for a piece of this age.
Movement
Inside beats the desirable Seiko Caliber 5206, an automatic movement with 23 jewels. This "Special" variant is known for its higher beat rate and robust construction compared to standard LM models. Monitoring shows a rate of approximately -55 to -65 seconds per day, indicating a complete and functioning mechanical movement.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original stainless steel bracelet, featuring the distinctive multi-link "beads of rice" style design. The clasp is signed with the "LM" and "Seiko" logos. The bracelet fits a wrist size of approximately 18cm and shows moderate stretch and surface wear.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The watch shows normal vintage wear, but less pronounced than Fair condition. Visible wear, scratches, and light marks, but not excessive. Moderate patina consistent with age. Case remains well-defined with acceptable vintage wear. Overall appearance is balanced and honest, without heavy wear.
Dimensions
Case diameter: 36mm excluding crown
Wrist size: Approximately 18cm
Remarks
The "Special" designation on the dial is not merely cosmetic; it denotes the use of the 52xx series caliber, which allows for instant date change at midnight and manual winding capability, features that set it apart from the standard 5606 based Lord Matics.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Lord Matic (LM) line was Seiko's mid-range offering, sitting just below the King Seiko and Grand Seiko. The LM Special was introduced later as an upgraded tier, utilizing the sophisticated 5200 series movements. These movements are historically significant as they were the last high-grade mechanical calibers designed by Seiko before the quartz crisis fully took hold, and their architecture was deemed good enough to be revived decades later for the 4S series in the 1990s.
