Presented for auction by Second Vintage
The Seiko Lord Matic (LM) series represents the sweet spot of 1970s Japanese watchmaking, sitting comfortably between the standard lineup and the high-end King Seiko and Grand Seiko models. This particular example features the desirable 5606 movement inside a distinctively shaped monocoque case. With its clean dial and sharp case lines, it offers a sophisticated vintage aesthetic that remains timeless on the wrist.
Brand: Seiko
Model: Lord Matic
Reference Number: 5606-7140
Serial Number: 142617
Movement: Automatic Cal. 5606
Dial: Silver
Case Size: 36 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Year: 1971
Condition: Good vintage condition. The watch appears very well preserved with a clean dial and sharp case lines, showing minimal wear consistent with a careful history. The movement is functional and operational. Timegrapher testing shows approx. 90-100 s/d on the timegrapher with ampltitude around 174.
Dial and Hands
The silver dial is preserved in remarkable condition, displaying a subtle vertical brushed texture that catches the light beautifully. It features applied silver baton indices with black central inserts, perfectly matching the slender handset. The applied "Seiko" and "LM" logos are crisp and bright. A framed day-date window is positioned at three o'clock, featuring a bilingual calendar wheel with English and Kanji days. The dial is signed "Japan 5606-7330T" at the bottom edge.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features the distinctive "Open Thru Glass" monocoque construction, designed for superior water resistance and structural integrity by eliminating the traditional removable caseback. The case retains its sharp factory lines with brushed upper surfaces on the lugs and contrasting polished sides. The bezel is smooth and polished, framing the crystal. The crown is original and sits flush against the case. There are only very minor signs of handling and age, consistent with a careful life.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the highly regarded Seiko Caliber 5606 automatic movement. This 25-jewel mechanism was a high-grade movement of its era, featuring hacking capabilities for precise time setting.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a classic black leather strap featuring an alligator grain pattern. It complements the silver dial perfectly and is ready for immediate wear.
Condition
This timepiece is in excellent vintage condition. The dial is flawless to the naked eye, and the case retains its original geometry with sharp edges and distinct brushing. The crystal is clear and free of significant marks. It presents as a very well-preserved example of 1970s Seiko craftsmanship.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in diameter excluding the crown, a classic size that offers a comfortable and elegant presence on the wrist.
Remarks
This Lord Matic is a wonderful example of Seiko's "Grammar of Design" era influence, offering high-end finishing at an accessible price point. The monocoque case design is a technically interesting feature that sets this reference apart from standard models. It is a collectible piece that doubles as a refined daily wearer.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Lord Matic line was positioned just below King Seiko in the brand's hierarchy. It was the first Seiko line to widely utilize the 5606 movement, which brought high-grade automatic winding and thin profiles to the mass market. These watches were manufactured at the Suwa Seikosha factory, as indicated by the swirl logo on the dial, and played a crucial role in establishing Seiko's reputation for mechanical excellence during the 1970s.
