Dial and Hands
The pristine silver sunburst dial is preserved in excellent, clean condition, providing a radiant backdrop for the applied faceted indices. Each marker features a black central accent that perfectly matches the baton hands, which remain clean with no visible oxidation or corrosion. Crisp black printed text and a subtle minute track frame the dial, while the applied Rado anchor logo sits proudly below twelve o'clock. A vibrant red date wheel display at three o'clock adds a striking pop of color to the monochromatic layout.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel tonneau-shaped case displays honest vintage wear, featuring brushed upper surfaces that transition into polished flanks. Light to moderate surface scratches and handling marks are visible throughout, though the case edges remain reasonably defined. The domed acrylic crystal is clear, showing no significant scratches, crazing, or chips. On the right flank, the original crown is signed with the Rado anchor logo and exhibits light, even wear across its fluting.
Movement
Inside beats the caliber AS 1858 automatic movement, featuring a handsome gold-tone finish across its plates and rotor. The mechanism presents a clean appearance with no visible corrosion, oxidation, or significant wear, and bears factory engravings including "RADO", "25 JEWELS", "SWISS", and the caliber number. Showing +23+25s/day on the timegrapher, the movement is performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a fresh black leather strap featuring contrasting white stitching. It appears unworn or very lightly used, complementing the dial's black accents perfectly.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The dial and hands are exceptionally well-preserved and clean. The stainless steel case shows honest age-related wear, with light to moderate surface scratches and handling marks typical of its age, while retaining good overall definition. The crystal is clear, and the movement is running strong and steady.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Rado 990 stands out for its remarkably clean silver sunburst dial and the engaging detail of its red date wheel. Housed in a classic 1970s tonneau case, it delivers strong period character and reliable automatic performance.
History
During the 1970s, Rado fully embraced bold, geometric case designs, moving away from traditional round silhouettes to explore tonneau, cushion, and shield-shaped profiles. The 990 line reflects this era of experimentation, utilizing dependable Swiss ebauches like the A. Schild (AS) calibers to ensure robust automatic performance. These watches represent a vibrant period in Swiss watchmaking, offering distinctive aesthetics that remain highly appreciated by vintage enthusiasts today.
