Dial and Hands
The vertically brushed silver dial presents a striking aesthetic, characterized by a prominent naturally aged vignette patina that darkens significantly around the outer perimeter and corners. This even, honest aging frames the dial center, which remains bright and highly legible. Applied faceted baton indices feature contrasting black inserts, perfectly matching the original black baton hands for excellent visual contrast. The dial furniture includes an applied Omega logo and the signature Constellation star, while the printed typography, including the chronometer certification text, remains crisp and fully intact. A framed date aperture sits cleanly at the three o'clock position. Close inspection reveals age-related spotting and surface oxidation concentrated near the dial edges and immediately surrounding the date window, reflecting its authentic vintage journey.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel television-shaped case showcases a bold architectural profile with a heavily brushed upper surface that contrasts sharply against the polished case flanks. The transition lines remain well-defined, retaining the factory intended geometric structure. The case exhibits honest signs of wear consistent with its age, including visible surface scratches, scuffs, and minor nicks along the polished sides and the bezel edge near the beautifully scalloped, signed Omega crown. The solid caseback features the iconic Constellation observatory medallion surrounded by eight stars, struck with excellent depth and clarity. A cleanly fitted crystal protects the dial, showing minimal wear and providing an unobstructed view of the dial beneath.
Movement
Inside this Constellation beats the Omega Caliber 1001, a highly capable automatic chronometer movement. The copper-finished caliber features twenty jewels and is factory adjusted to five positions and temperature, as clearly engraved on the movement plates. The distinctive rotor, featuring the cutout Omega logo, sweeps smoothly across the mechanism. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece, the timegrapher results show a deviation of +7 to +8 seconds per day with strong amplitude. Movement has been recently serviced and adjusted, and performs strongly.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original stainless steel brick-link bracelet, a highly sought-after design that seamlessly integrates with the case architecture. The links exhibit a brushed finish that complements the case top, and the bracelet articulates smoothly. It is secured by an original folding clasp featuring a prominent, raised Omega logo. The clasp and links show moderate surface scratches and handling marks consistent with regular wear, maintaining the overall authentic condition of the timepiece.
Condition
Offered in good vintage condition. The dial shows distinct and heavy perimeter patination along with localized spotting near the edges, providing a character-rich vintage aesthetic. The stainless steel case remains structurally sound with well-defined lines, though it bears visible scratches, minor nicks, and handling marks throughout the polished and brushed surfaces. The original bracelet shows corresponding wear. The movement is exceptionally clean and operating with excellent precision.
Dimensions
The case measures 33 mm in diameter, excluding the signed crown.
Remarks
The bracelet is sized to accommodate a wrist up to 18.5 cm.
History
The Omega Constellation line has represented the pinnacle of the brand's precision watchmaking since its introduction in 1952. Originally defined by its pie-pan dials and elegant lugs, the collection evolved dramatically in the late 1960s and 1970s to embrace the avant-garde design trends of the era. The introduction of television-screen cases and integrated bracelets marked a radical departure from traditional watchmaking, appealing to a new generation of clients seeking modernity and robust daily wearability. Despite these bold aesthetic shifts, the Constellation retained its core identity as a highly accurate, chronometer-certified instrument, symbolized by the observatory medallion on the caseback representing Omega's historical precision records at the Kew, Geneva, and Neuchatel observatories.
