Dial and Hands
The watch features a beautiful champagne sunburst dial that has been preserved in outstanding condition. The applied gold baton indices are crisp and catch the light elegantly, double-indexed at the twelve o'clock position. The dial text remains sharp, displaying the "Seiko Crown Special" signature and the "Diashock 23 Jewels" designation. Notably, the dial features the eight-pointed star logo above six o'clock, indicating a "Special Dial" with high-quality markers. The gold-tone Dauphine hands are in excellent condition, complementing the overall warmth of the face.
Case and Crystal
The 34mm case is finished in 14k gold fill, as stamped clearly on the caseback. The case retains its original lines with distinct, sharp lugs that offer a refined profile on the wrist. There are minor signs of handling consistent with age, but no heavy plating loss is visible. The watch retains its original "S" signed crown, a desirable detail for collectors. The acrylic crystal is clear and free from distracting marks, allowing for an unobstructed view of the dial.
Movement
Inside beats the high-grade Seikosha manual winding movement with 23 jewels, a calibre known for its robustness and accuracy potential. The movement plates appear clean and well-maintained. Timegrapher results show the watch running between -18 and -22 seconds per day, which indicates a healthy movement operating within acceptable vintage tolerances.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a vintage-style brown leather strap featuring contrasting stitching near the lugs. The leather is supple and complements the gold tones of the case perfectly, secured by a gold-tone pin buckle.
Condition
This timepiece is in excellent vintage condition. The dial is exceptionally clean for a watch from the early 1960s, showing almost no signs of aging. The 14k gold-filled case is well-preserved with deep engravings on the caseback. The movement winds smoothly and is functioning reliably.
Dimensions
The case measures 34 mm in diameter excluding the crown. The lug-to-lug length ensures a comfortable fit on a variety of wrist sizes, maintaining a classic dress watch proportion.
Remarks
The Seiko Crown Special is often regarded by enthusiasts as one of the finest manual-wind watches produced by Seiko before the dominance of the Grand and King Seiko lines. This specific example, with its high jewel count and "Special" dial classification, represents a high point in mid-century Japanese watchmaking.
History
Introduced in the late 1950s and produced through the early 1960s, the Seiko Crown series was pivotal in Seiko's pursuit of high accuracy and chronometer-grade performance. The "Special" variation was an upgraded version of the standard Crown, featuring a refined movement with 23 jewels compared to the standard 19 or 21, and served as the direct technological foundation for the very first Grand Seiko launched in 1960. owning a Crown Special is effectively owning a piece of the lineage that created Japan's most prestigious watch brand.
