Dial and Hands
The silver sunburst dial is exceptionally clean and vibrant, remaining very well preserved with minimal signs of aging. Its surface interacts beautifully with the light, providing an ideal backdrop for the bright and clean applied faceted indices. All printed text is crisp and fully intact, while the day and date window frame at three o'clock presents cleanly. The dauphine hands are lightly aged, showing some minor surface oxidation and spotting visible under macro inspection, though their shape and overall finish remain well defined.
Case and Crystal
The 38 mm stainless steel case displays honest vintage wear, with moderate surface scratches and scuffs consistent with age. The lugs retain their general shape but show signs of wear alongside indications of possible light previous polishing. The smooth integrated bezel exhibits surface scratches consistent with the rest of the case. On the reverse, the caseback engraving, prominently featuring the distinctive dolphin motif, remains clearly visible despite showing some softening from wear. A recessed crown is positioned at four o'clock, with a dedicated date pusher at two o'clock that appears in good condition. The domed acrylic crystal shows some light surface scratches and minor wear, with no major cracks or deep chips visible.
Movement
Inside the case beats the Seiko caliber 7619A, a 25-jewel automatic movement. The caliber appears very clean, displaying no obvious signs of corrosion or heavy wear. The rotor and bridges show a bright finish, and the factory engravings remain crisp and legible. The timegrapher records a rate of -6-10s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is paired with a black textured leather strap featuring white contrast stitching. It appears to be in lightly used condition, offering a comfortable and classic complement to the steel case and silver dial.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The stainless steel case shows moderate surface scratches, wear to the lugs, and possible light previous polishing, while the dolphin caseback engraving shows expected softening. The silver sunburst dial is exceptionally well preserved, offset by minor surface oxidation on the hands. The domed acrylic crystal bears light surface scratches. Supported by the recorded timegrapher result of -6-10s/day, the automatic movement is running very strongly.
Dimensions
The case measures 38 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Sportsmatic Deluxe offers a superb mid-century aesthetic defined by its exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial and applied faceted indices. The presence of the distinctive dolphin motif on the caseback and the dedicated quickset date pusher make this a highly attractive example of a premium 1960s Seiko.
History
The Sportsmatic Deluxe variants were introduced by Seiko to provide a more premium offering within the broader Sportsmatic line. These models were distinguished by upgraded movements and more elaborate dial finishing. This specific example is powered by the Seiko caliber 7619A, a 25-jewel automatic movement operating at 18,000 beats per hour. A defining technical feature of the caliber 7619 is the dedicated pusher on the side of the case, specifically engineered for advancing the date. True to its design era, the movement relies entirely on the automatic rotor for winding and cannot be hand-wound, while the day display advances conventionally through the hands rather than a quickset mechanism.
