Dial and Hands
The vibrant and well-preserved two-tone blue dial is the defining feature of this timepiece, characterized by striking horizontal banding that creates a dynamic visual presence. The applied silver-tone indices and Seiko logo stand proud against the blue surface, while all printed text remains crisp and intact. There is no significant spotting, staining, or damage visible on the dial itself. The time is indicated by baton hands featuring central black stripes. Under magnification, the hands reveal minor surface oxidation and light spotting, with the luminous or paint fill remaining intact but displaying expected aging. A desirable English and Kanji day-date window sits securely at the three o'clock position.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case displays honest vintage wear, featuring polished flanks contrasting nicely with brushed upper lug surfaces. The case geometry and edges remain relatively defined, though they show moderate surface scratches, scuffs, and signs of normal use consistent with its age. A thin polished steel bezel ring frames the dial, exhibiting light scratches that match the wear on the case. The partially recessed, unsigned crown shows normal wear. The watch is fitted with a flat-top crystal with beveled edges, which remains free of major chips or cracks but does present some light surface scratches and minor dust.
Movement
Inside the case beats the Seiko caliber 5606A automatic movement, clearly engraved with the Seiko signature and its 23-jewel count. The rotor and bridges appear relatively clean, though some dirt and grime are visible around the inner case rim where the caseback seals. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring white contrast stitching, creating a casual and versatile pairing. The strap appears lightly used, showing only minor creasing from gentle wear.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The striking two-tone blue dial is excellently preserved and highly vibrant, free of significant spotting or damage. The hands show minor oxidation and spotting under magnification. The stainless steel case and bezel display moderate surface scratches and scuffs, maintaining an honest vintage character with relatively defined edges. The crystal shows light surface scratches and minor dust but no major damage. Supported by the timegrapher reading of -30-33s/day, the movement is performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in diameter, excluding the crown.
Remarks
This Lord Matic offers a highly compelling aesthetic with its vibrant two-tone blue dial and horizontal banding. Combined with the collector favourite English and Kanji day wheel and its reliable 5600-series architecture, it represents a highly attractive example of 1970s Seiko design.
History
The Seiko Lord Matic, or LM series, was introduced in the late 1960s as a high-quality mid-tier offering, positioned just below the prestigious King Seiko and Grand Seiko lines. Designed for the discerning professional, the Lord Matic range showcased Seiko's evolving design language during a highly innovative period for the brand. The 5600 series of calibers that powered these watches proved so successful and reliable that the architecture was eventually modified to serve in King Seiko and Grand Seiko models. Today, the Lord Matic is highly respected by collectors for its excellent mechanical pedigree and the wide variety of creative dial designs produced throughout the 1970s.
