Dial and Hands
The beautifully preserved dial features a grey to brown gradient sunburst finish that catches the light wonderfully. Applied silver-tone indices with black center stripes provide sharp contrast, perfectly matched by the clean silver-tone baton hands, which also feature black center stripes. A slender needle seconds hand sweeps across the clean surface, which shows no visible spotting or degradation. At the three o'clock position, a framed window displays the day and date, notably featuring a dual-language English and Kanji day wheel. The applied Seiko and LM logos complete this striking and well-preserved gradient dial.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel cushion-shaped case displays honest vintage wear while preserving its original finishing lines. Brushed upper surfaces transition cleanly to polished flanks, with the case edges remaining reasonably defined. Moderate surface scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use are present across the case. A polished smooth bezel ring surrounds the crystal and shows light hairline scratches. The small, partially recessed crown with a coin edge grip is positioned at three o'clock and remains unsigned. The flat crystal with a beveled edge is in good condition, showing only minor surface scratches and dust visible under harsh light, with no major chips or cracks.
Movement
Inside beats the reliable automatic caliber 5606A, featuring 23 jewels. The movement displays clean plates and a clean rotor, with clear engravings reading Seiko, 23 Jewels, and Japan 5606A. There is no visible corrosion or significant tool marks on the caliber itself, though some dirt is visible on the case sealing area outside the movement. On the timegrapher, it measures +20+22s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original signed stainless steel multi-link bracelet, a fantastic addition for collectors. The clasp is proudly signed SEIKO LM, and the endlinks are stamped XGB 081. The bracelet shows moderate stretch and surface scratches from normal use, retaining an attractive character in highly wearable condition. It accommodates a maximum wrist size of up to 18 cm.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The dial and hands are remarkably well preserved, showing no visible oxidation or degradation. The stainless steel case and original bracelet present honest wear, with moderate surface scratches and some stretch to the links, maintaining their original character. The crystal shows only minor surface wear.
Dimensions
The case measures 27 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Lord Matic stands out due to its beautifully preserved grey-brown gradient dial and the inclusion of its original SEIKO LM signed bracelet. The addition of the English and Kanji day wheel makes it a particularly appealing example of 1970s Japanese watchmaking.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Seiko Lord Matic line was positioned just below the King Seiko and Grand Seiko ranges, offering premium automatic movements and sophisticated case designs to the discerning public. The 5600 series of calibers became renowned for their thin profile and reliable performance, eventually forming the basis for many higher-end Seiko models of the era. Today, the Lord Matic remains highly appreciated by collectors for its exceptional build quality and diverse array of dial variations.
