This sought-after mid-century Omega features a distinctive rectangular geometry and a beautifully preserved waffle-textured dial. Dial and Hands
The beautifully preserved dial features a striking waffle or honeycomb textured surface, presenting very clean condition with minimal signs of aging or spotting. Applied gold-tone faceted dart indices are complemented by Arabic numerals at the 12, 3, and 9 o'clock positions. A sub-seconds dial at 6 o'clock adds visual depth with its concentric circular texture. The original style gold-tone dauphine hour and minute hands, along with the simple stick sub-seconds hand, match the dial furniture nicely and show only light surface oxidation visible under magnification.
Case and Crystal
The 14K gold filled rectangular case showcases a distinctive mid-century design highlighted by stepped and flared lugs. The case exhibits moderate surface scratches and honest wear consistent with age, along with verdigris and oxidation visible on the inner case edges where the caseback seats. The gold-tone knurled crown is clearly signed with the Omega logo and displays some plating wear on its outer edge. A domed acrylic crystal with a rectangular profile protects the dial, showing minor surface scratches visible in reflected light.
Movement
Powering the watch is the manual wind Omega Caliber 302, featuring 17 jewels and the brand's signature copper-colored plating. The movement presents a clean overall appearance with bright plates and bridges, showing no obvious signs of corrosion or damage, and bears the OXG import code. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. The timegrapher recorded a strong rate of +18+20s/day.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a complementary black leather strap featuring an alligator or crocodile grain pattern and contrasting light-colored stitching. It is secured by an unsigned gold-tone pin buckle.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The beautifully preserved textured dial remains exceptionally clean, while the 14K gold filled case displays honest, moderate surface scratches and age-related wear, including verdigris on the inner case edges. The hands show light oxidation under magnification, and the signed crown exhibits plating wear on its outer edge. Supported by the recorded timegrapher result, the movement is performing very strongly.
Dimensions
The case size is 24 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This mid-century Omega is distinguished by its incredible waffle dial and dramatic flared lug case geometry. The clean Caliber 302 movement and highly attractive aesthetic make this an excellent addition for collectors of shaped vintage watches.
History
During the mid-twentieth century, Omega experimented heavily with shaped cases and textured dials, moving beyond traditional round profiles to cater to an increasingly style-conscious market. The Caliber 302 is part of Omega's highly regarded family of rectangular and tonneau-shaped manual wind movements, renowned for their robust architecture and reliable performance. Watches from this era featuring complex lug designs and intricate dial textures represent a beautiful period of Omega's dress watch production, remaining highly appreciated by collectors today.
