Now available at auction from Second Vintage This early 1940s Breitling Chronomat reference 769 is a highly sought-after piece of mid-century horology, distinguished by its Swiss patent dial and an intriguing mixed-branding configuration. Featuring the famous rotating slide rule bezel and a movement and caseback signed by the American importer Welsbro Watch Co, this chronograph represents a fascinating chapter in transatlantic watch distribution. Brand: Breitling Model: Chronomat Reference Number: 769 Serial Number: 556427 Movement: Manual wind chronograph Dial: patinated with significant spotting and Swiss patent number Case Size: 36 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Stainless Steel Production Year: 1940s Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: +10s+16s/day, performing remarkably well. Dial and Hands The dial is heavily patinated with significant, pervasive spotting across the entire surface. Despite this heavy aging, the printed scales and text remain mostly legible, prominently displaying the notable Swiss patent number + 217 012. The luminous material on the numerals is heavily degraded or missing. The blued steel syringe-style hour and minute hands are paired with a red chronograph sweep hand. These hands are aged but structurally intact, though their luminous material is darkened and partially degraded. Case and Crystal The stainless steel case features distinct lug geometry with faceted lugs, showing honest vintage wear. There are moderate scratches and wear consistent with age throughout the surface. The coin-edge rotating bezel, equipped with the signature slide rule scale, shows wear, softening of edges, and dirt accumulation. An unsigned fluted crown and rectangular chronograph pushers show some wear. Inside, the caseback is signed Welsbro Watch Co. The domed acrylic crystal displays light surface scratches and scuffs. Movement Powering the watch is a manual wind chronograph movement. Contrasting with the Breitling dial, the movement is prominently signed Welsbro Watch Co, SWISS, SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS UNADJUSTED, R S, and A F. The caliber shows some oxidation and wear on the screw heads and plates. +10s+16s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. Strap The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring a crocodile pattern, showing light wear. Condition Good vintage condition. The dial exhibits heavy, pervasive spotting and patina across its entire surface, with heavily degraded or missing luminous material. The stainless steel case and coin-edge bezel display moderate scratches, dirt accumulation, softening of edges, and honest vintage wear. The manual wind movement shows oxidation and wear on the plates and screw heads, though the timegrapher results reflect excellent current mechanical performance. Dimensions The case measures 36 mm (excluding the crown). Remarks This early reference 769 offers a compelling mix of Chronomat history and transatlantic import intrigue. With its Swiss patent dial, distinct faceted lugs, and strong mechanical performance, it is a highly engaging find for the dedicated vintage chronograph collector. History The Breitling Chronomat reference 769 was introduced in the early 1940s and represents a major development in scientific chronographs, debuting the rotating slide rule bezel that would later define the brand's aviation aesthetic. During the mid-twentieth century, Swiss manufacturers frequently partnered with established United States importers to navigate complex trade regulations and tariffs. Welsbro Watch Co, a New York-based importer, was one such entity. It was not uncommon for imported Swiss watches to feature mixed branding, with cases and movements stamped by the importer to satisfy customs requirements while retaining the original manufacturer dial. These transatlantic configurations provide a compelling glimpse into the era's specialized distribution networks and remain highly sought-after by dedicated collectors today.
