Presented for auction by Second Vintage
This early first-generation King Seiko is a sought-after collector favourite, distinguished by its heavily patinated stardust dial and the iconic gold shield medallion preserved on its caseback. Representing a pivotal moment in the brand's pursuit of high-end chronometry, this 1963 reference J14102 KS offers tremendous historical character and honest vintage wear.
Brand: Seiko
Model: King Seiko
Reference Number: J14102 KS
Serial Number: 3413836
Movement: 25-jewel manual wind
Dial: Heavy stardust patina with applied indices
Case Size: 35 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: 14K Gold Filled
Production Year: 1963
Condition: Good vintage condition. Movement serviced. Timegrapher: -20-22s/day, running strong and steady.
Dial and Hands
The dial displays a heavy, even spotting and patina across the entire surface, creating a striking stardust effect. Despite this degradation, the text and minute track remain fully legible. The applied indices show some oxidation and dulling. The dauphine hands are aged and oxidized, showing noticeable scratches and a dulled gold-tone finish.
Case and Crystal
The 14K gold-filled case shows honest wear consistent with its age, particularly on the lug edges where the plating is worn. Scratches and handling marks are present throughout, alongside visible tarnish and oxidation between the lugs and on the case flanks. The thin fixed bezel shows wear and light scratches matching the case body. The crown's plating is heavily worn, exposing the base metal, and its knurling is softened from use. The caseback medallion is well preserved, displaying clear details. The domed acrylic crystal shows light surface scratches under direct light but has no major cracks or chips, providing clear visibility of the dial.
Movement
The manual wind movement features clean plates and bridges with minimal signs of wear and screws that appear in good condition. Engravings for King Seiko and 25 jewels are present, with no obvious signs of corrosion or moisture damage visible. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. The movement was serviced.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring contrast stitching, offering a casual vintage pairing. The strap shows light signs of wear and accommodates a maximum wrist fit of 18.5 cm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The movement was serviced and, supported by the recorded timegrapher result, is running strong and steady. The case displays noticeable wear to the gold-filled plating, particularly on the lug edges and crown, along with scratches and tarnish on the flanks. The dial exhibits a heavy, even patina, while the hands show oxidation and scratches. The acrylic crystal bears light surface marks but remains clear.
Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm in diameter, excluding the crown.
Remarks
This first-generation King Seiko reference J14102 KS offers tremendous historical appeal with its preserved caseback medallion. The heavily patinated dial provides a unique visual character, supported by a clean and well-running 25-jewel movement.
History
Introduced in the early 1960s, the first-generation King Seiko was developed as a high-end chronometer to rival the precision of Grand Seiko. Produced by the Daini Seikosha factory, these early models are historically significant for pushing the boundaries of Japanese watchmaking. The reference J14102 KS is particularly sought-after by collectors for its elegant case geometry, dauphine hands, and the distinctive shield medallion on the caseback, representing a foundational era in the brand's legacy.
