Dial and Hands
The dial is well-preserved and vibrant, featuring a beautiful silver sunburst finish that catches the light brilliantly. It is adorned with applied faceted indices, the signature Rado anchor, and the distinctive green seahorse logos. A striking red date display adds a sharp contrast to the very clean surface, which shows minimal signs of aging or spotting. Sweeping across the dial are classic Dauphine style hands, which exhibit visible oxidation and spotting on the surface under magnification, offering an aged character with visible patina that contrasts with the pristine dial.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a smooth polished bezel and presents honest vintage wear. There are moderate scratches and handling marks across the polished surfaces and bezel consistent with its age. The caseback engravings remain clear and legible. The watch is fitted with its signed crown featuring the Rado anchor logo, which shows some wear to the knurling and polished surface. A clear domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, displaying no major scratches or visible cracks.
Movement
Powering this Green Horse is the 30-jewel AS 1701 automatic movement. The rotor is engraved with RADO, WORLD TRAVEL, and THIRTY 30 JEWELS, and shows some minor tarnish and marks on the edge. The caliber maintains a generally clean appearance with no obvious heavy corrosion. The timegrapher records a rate of -7-11s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is paired with a black leather strap featuring white contrast stitching, complementing the vintage aesthetic.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The stainless steel case and bezel show honest wear with moderate scratches and handling marks consistent with age, while the caseback engravings remain crisp. The vibrant silver sunburst dial is exceptionally clean, though the Dauphine hands display visible oxidation and spotting under magnification. The signed crown shows typical wear to its knurling. Supported by the recorded timegrapher result, the movement is performing very strongly.
Dimensions
The case measures 35mm in diameter, excluding the crown.
Remarks
This Green Horse delivers classic 1960s styling with its striking red date numerals and applied green seahorse logo. The beautifully preserved dial and highly capable 30-jewel automatic movement make this an excellent addition to any vintage collection.
History
Rado introduced the Horse collection in the late 1950s, creating a diverse family of models that would become central to the brand's mid-century identity. The Green Horse emerged as one of the most recognized variations, celebrated for its distinctive twin seahorse emblem and dependable automatic movements. During the 1960s, Rado frequently utilized reliable Swiss calibers like the AS 1701, outfitting them with high jewel counts to ensure longevity and smooth operation. Today, these models are appreciated by collectors for their charming design language and steady mechanical performance.
