Dial and Hands
The exceptionally well-preserved silver and cream-tone dial features an attractive crosshair design. It is very clean overall, showing minimal signs of aging or spotting. Applied faceted gold-tone indices and an applied Omega logo complete the layout. The original dauphine-style hands display distinct age-related wear, with significant oxidation and tarnish visible on their surfaces.
Case and Crystal
The 35 mm gold-plated case features a smooth integrated bezel and a substantial lug profile. Stamped internally for a heavy 80-micron gold plating, the case displays honest vintage wear, including visible scratches and handling marks throughout, with the lugs showing moderate wear while retaining their general shape. The scalloped Omega-signed crown shows some wear and dirt accumulation in its recesses. The domed acrylic crystal is clear, with no major scratches, cracks, or crazing visible. The gold-plated caseback exterior exhibits notable patina, including tarnish and oxidation spots.
Movement
Powering the watch is the automatic Omega Caliber 501, a 20-jewel movement cleanly engraved with OMEGA WATCH Co SWISS and the serial number 16242564. The copper-colored plating remains bright and well-preserved, with clean bridges and a clean rotor, alongside minor marks on some screw heads. Timegrapher results indicate +4+6s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a high-quality black leather strap featuring white contrast stitching. It appears to be in very good, lightly used condition.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The beautifully preserved dial stands out against the honest wear of the case and hands. The heavy gold-plated case shows expected scratches, handling marks, and oxidation spots, particularly on the caseback exterior. The original hands exhibit significant tarnish, adding distinct age-related wear. The movement is clean and presents beautifully.
Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm in diameter, excluding the crown.
Remarks
This Omega Automatic presents a highly attractive crosshair dial configuration housed in a substantial 80-micron gold-plated case. The distinct patina on the hands and caseback highlights its vintage age, while the Caliber 501 movement continues to perform beautifully.
History
The 1950s represented a significant era for Omega's automatic dress watches, characterized by elegant dial layouts and robust mechanical foundations. The dual reference numbering on this caseback (2888 / 2864 3 SC) indicates the sub-seconds variant (2888) and the sweep-seconds configuration (2864 SC) for this model family. This specific example is noted for its beefy lug design and is powered by the Caliber 501, a 20-jewel automatic movement known for its reliability and smooth performance.
