This is a remarkable example of early 1960s Japanese watchmaking, featuring the highly collectible "820" dial configuration. This Seiko Sportsmatic Calendar combines a significant case size for its era with a stunningly preserved sunburst dial, making it a sophisticated choice for the vintage enthusiast. With its distinctive gold-plated case and "Seikosha" marked rotor, this timepiece represents the golden era of Seiko's affordable luxury lines, offering both historical significance and undeniable wrist presence.

Reference Number: 15037D
Serial Number: 3512572
Movement: Automatic Seikosha 19 Jewels
Dial: Silver Sunburst
Case Size: 37 mm
Case Material: Gold Plated (EGP)
Production Year: 1963
Condition: Near mint vintage condition. The watch presents minimal signs of previous wear, with the gold plating exceptionally well preserved and the sunburst dial in outstanding condition. Timegrapher results indicate the movement is healthy.
Dial and Hands
The highlight of this timepiece is the expansive silver sunburst dial, which remains in outstanding condition. It features applied gold-tone baton indices that catch the light beautifully, complemented by sharp gold-tone dauphine hands. The dial text is crisp, displaying the "Seiko Sportsmatic Calendar 820" signature along with the "Diashock 19 Jewels" designation at the bottom. A framed date window sits at the 3 o'clock position, adding utility to the elegant design.
Case and Crystal
The 37mm case commands a strong presence on the wrist, larger than many dress watches of the early 1960s. It is finished in Electro Gold Plating (EGP) with a stainless steel snap-back caseback. The gold plating is exceptionally well preserved, showing only the most minimal evidence of handling, and the caseback features the classic "SMAC" (Sportsmatic Calendar) engraving, which remains legible. The acrylic crystal is clear and presents well.
Movement
Powering the watch is a robust Seikosha automatic caliber with 19 jewels. The rotor is clearly signed "Seikosha Sportsmatic," a detail prized by collectors of early Seiko automatics. The movement is clean and functional. Timegrapher testing shows the watch running between +39 and +46 seconds per day, which indicates a healthy movement operating within acceptable vintage tolerances.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring contrasting yellow stitching that perfectly complements the gold tones of the case and indices. The strap is in fresh condition and ready for immediate wear.
Condition
This piece is graded in near mint vintage condition. The case plating is extremely well preserved for its age, with the original luster intact and only the slightest surface marks from careful handling. The dial is preserved to a stunning standard, showing remarkable originality and clarity. The overall appearance is clean, sharp, and highly appealing, setting it apart among other vintage examples.
Dimensions
With a case diameter of 37mm excluding the crown, the watch wears comfortably and prominently on the wrist, bridging the gap between vintage proportions and modern tastes.
Remarks
The Sportsmatic Calendar 820 is a transitional model that paved the way for the legendary Seiko 5 line. Finding an example with such a clean dial and the correct early reference markings is becoming increasingly difficult. This is a fantastic entry point into serious vintage Seiko collecting or a perfect daily dress watch for those who appreciate history.
History
Introduced in the early 1960s, the Sportsmatic line was designed to bring the convenience of automatic winding and water resistance to a wider audience. The "820" series represents some of the earliest iterations of this successful lineage. Produced in May of 1963, this specific watch dates back to the pre-Olympics era of Japanese manufacturing, a time when Seiko was rapidly establishing itself as a world-class competitor to Swiss horology.
