Offered in this auction by Second Vintage
This Seiko Lord Matic Special is a distinctive example of 1970s Japanese watchmaking, combining a striking geometric design with a high-grade mechanical movement. Featuring the desirable "Special" designation, this timepiece houses the high-beat 5206 caliber, a movement celebrated by collectors for its superior engineering and higher beat rate compared to standard models of the era. The deep, matte blue dial is framed by a square "TV-screen" case, creating a bold vintage aesthetic that remains sophisticated on the wrist.
Brand: Seiko
Model: Lord Matic Special
Reference Number: 5206-5060
Serial Number: 2N7789
Movement: Automatic Caliber 5206
Dial: Deep matte blue with faceted indices
Case Size: 35 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Year: 1972
Condition: Good vintage condition. The watch shows honest signs of age and wear to the case and crystal while the dial remains in exceptional condition.
Dial and Hands
The dial is finished in a deep matte blue tone that can appear nearly black depending on the lighting. It features applied faceted baton indices that catch the light elegantly. The original handset is polished with white inserts for legibility. At the three o'clock position, there is a framed day and date window, featuring a bilingual day wheel with both English and Kanji characters. The "LM Special" and "23 JEWELS" branding is crisp, accompanied by the Daini Seikosha lightning bolt logo above six o'clock. The dial surface is remarkably well-preserved, showing no visible spotting or degradation.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a distinctive square shape with faceted lugs, often referred to as a "TV-screen" design. The case geometry remains defined, though it displays visible signs of vintage wear, including surface scratches, dings, and marks consistent with decades of use. The crystal is a faceted glass type which adds depth to the dial but shows noticeable scratches and wear along the edges and surface, typical for a watch of this age. The crown is recessed slightly into the case side, maintaining the sleek profile.
Movement
Powering the watch is the Seiko Caliber 5206 automatic movement. This is a 23-jewel, high-beat movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (8 beats per second), offering reliable vintage performance. The movement features a quickset mechanism for both the day and date, and it is running within vintage tolerances.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring white contrast stitching. The strap is in clean condition and complements the dark tones of the dial, securing with a stainless steel buckle.
Condition
This timepiece is in good vintage condition. The case shows evident wear with scratches and small nicks present on the bezel and sides, reflecting its life as a worn object. The crystal also bears scratches from use. However, the dial is in stunning condition, free from the patina or damage often seen on vintage pieces. The movement is clean and functioning correctly.
Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm in width excluding the crown, which is a classic size for this era. Due to the square shape, the watch wears slightly larger on the wrist than a round case of the same diameter, offering a substantial presence.
Remarks
The Lord Matic Special represents a significant step up from the standard Lord Matic line, bridging the gap to King Seiko. The 5206 movement found inside is historically significant as it belongs to the 52-stream of calibers, which were later resurrected in the 1990s as the 4S series for high-end Seiko mechanicals.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s and produced through the 1970s, the Lord Matic series was Seiko's mid-tier automatic line, offering high quality and advanced designs. The "Special" versions were introduced to offer higher beat rates and refined movements. This specific example, produced in November 1972, showcases the daring case shapes that defined 1970s horology while housing a movement that remains respected for its durability and precision engineering.
