Dial and Hands
The dial is a captivating emerald green gradient that deepens toward the outer edges, finished with a radiant sunburst texture that plays beautifully with the light. It features applied gold-tone faceted indices with flat tops that provide excellent legibility and depth. A prominently framed day-date aperture sits at the three o'clock position, displaying the day in a crisp blue font. The applied gold-tone Seiko and LM logos, along with the printed Suwa factory symbol, remain sharp and intact. The gold-tone dauphine hands feature central black stripes, tying the sophisticated aesthetic together. The dial remains in very good condition overall, mostly free of spotting or surface degradation, maintaining an attractive factory finish.
Case and Crystal
The 36 mm stainless steel case exhibits classic 1970s geometry, featuring brushed upper lug surfaces that transition into polished flanks. The case retains its strong factory lines and sharp lug profiles, while exhibiting visible, honest vintage wear and surface scratches consistent with age and use. A recessed crown sits neatly at the three o'clock position, maintaining the sleek silhouette of the case. The watch is fitted with a distinctive faceted crystal, cut with angular planes that create a unique visual distortion and depth over the dial. The crystal shows some light, age-appropriate surface marks but remains fully intact and visually striking. The screw-down stainless steel caseback carries clearly engraved factory reference and serial numbers.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko Caliber 5606A, a highly regarded 23-jewel automatic movement from the golden era of Japanese watchmaking. Inspection of the movement reveals a clean rotor and well-preserved bridges, with the factory caliber engravings visible. Running within vintage tolerances, offering reliable vintage performance. The timegrapher indicates a performance of +41 to +43 seconds per day.
Strap
The watch is presented on its original, period correct stainless steel multi-link bracelet. The intricate link design perfectly complements the faceted aesthetics of the watch head. The folding clasp is stamped with the Seiko and LM logos, confirming its originality. The bracelet shows moderate stretch and honest surface wear consistent with age, accommodating a wrist size of up to 17.5 cm.
Condition
This Lord Matic survives in strong vintage condition. The dial stands out with its very nice preservation and factory finish. The case shows visible signs of vintage wear and surface marks, but retains crisp edges and good factory finishing. The original signed bracelet is an appealing value addition, and while the faceted crystal exhibits expected signs of age, it continues to provide the dramatic visual effect intended by Seiko's designers.
Dimensions
The stainless steel case measures 36 mm in diameter, excluding the crown. The attached original bracelet will accommodate a wrist circumference of up to 17.5 cm.
Remarks
Colored dial variations of the Lord Matic, particularly those featuring original faceted crystals and factory-signed bracelets, are highly coveted in today's vintage market. This specific configuration, with its lush green gradient and gold-tone accents, represents one of the most attractive executions of the reference. It is a highly wearable and distinctive piece of Seiko history.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Seiko Lord Matic series was designed to offer premium mechanical movements and sophisticated styling to the upwardly mobile professional. Utilizing the advanced 56-series calibers, which were also modified for use in King Seiko and Grand Seiko models, the Lord Matic line was a testament to Seiko's manufacturing prowess. During the 1970s, the LM range became the canvas for some of Seiko's most daring designs, incorporating vibrant colored dials, gradient finishes, and complex faceted crystals that reflected the bold fashion sensibilities of the decade. Today, these expressive JDM pieces are celebrated for their unique character and undeniable mechanical pedigree.
