With its historical significance and stunning preservation, this timepiece represents the golden era of Seiko's pursuit of horological perfection.

Dial and Hands
The silver sunburst dial is in stunning vintage condition, retaining a bright and clean finish that catches the light beautifully. It features the highly collectible "Chronometer" script below the Seiko logo, a detail specific to these early 57GS models. The dial is adorned with the distinct eight-pointed star symbol above six o'clock, indicating a "Special Dial" (SD) with solid gold indices. The razor-sharp dauphine hands are polished to perfection, and the date window is framed elegantly at the three o'clock position.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features the robust and angular design language that defined the early Grand Seiko "Grammar of Design," with broad, thick lugs that give the watch a substantial presence on the wrist. The case shows normal signs of vintage wear with surface scratches consistent with age, but the geometry remains strong. The original "GS" signed crown is present. The caseback displays the iconic gold Grand Seiko Lion medallion, which shows some wear and patina but remains visible and intact, a cherished detail for collectors.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the prestigious Caliber 5722A, a 35-jewel manual winding movement that was chronometer-rated at the time of production. The movement presents cleanly in the photographs. Timegrapher testing indicates a daily rate of approximately -41s to -49s/day, which indicates a complete and functioning movement.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a vintage-style brown leather strap that complements the silver tones of the dial and the rugged elegance of the steel case. The strap is in good condition and ready for immediate wear.
Condition
This timepiece is in excellent vintage condition. The most notable attribute is the dial, which is remarkably free of the staining or heavy patina often found on examples of this age. The case retains its architectural integrity with honest wear. The gold medallion on the caseback shows typical rubbing from decades of wear but confirms the authenticity and history of the piece.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in diameter excluding the crown, offering a classic mid-century proportion that wears slightly larger due to the thick lug design.
Remarks
The Grand Seiko 43999 is one of the most historically significant models in the brand's archive. As a pre-1966 model, it carries the "Chronometer" text that was later removed due to appeal from the Swiss observatory testing bureaus. This specific example, dating to April 1965, captures the essence of the "Self-Dater" line with its blend of practicality and high-end finishing.
History
Introduced in 1964, the 57GS (Grand Seiko Self-Dater) was the second generation of Grand Seiko watches and marked a significant evolution for the brand. It was designed to compete directly with the finest Swiss chronometers of the era. The 43999 reference was the first Grand Seiko to feature a calendar function and implemented a quick-set date mechanism, a rare feature for the time. These early models are celebrated today for establishing the high standards of accuracy and legibility that Grand Seiko is renowned for globally.
