Dial and Hands
The silvered dial displays a gentle, even patina and light spotting visible under magnification, giving the face an authentic vintage character. The applied gold-tone indices provide depth against the lightly aged surface, while the dial text and printing remain clear and intact. The gold-tone dauphine hands exhibit significant oxidation, spotting, and surface degradation, showing clear signs of age.
Case and Crystal
The gold-tone upper case shows honest wear, with moderate scratches and handling marks present across the lugs and flanks. The smooth gold-tone bezel displays light scratches consistent with the rest of the case. Despite this wear, the lug geometry remains generally well-defined. The stainless steel caseback is a highlight, featuring a crisp and well-preserved Seamaster hippocampus medallion. The watch is fitted with a gold-tone knurled crown with the Omega logo clearly visible. A domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, remaining clear with only minor superficial scratches.
Movement
Inside is the Omega caliber 562 automatic movement, featuring 24 jewels. The movement is in excellent visual condition, displaying clean copper-colored plating with no obvious signs of corrosion, moisture damage, or mishandling. The screw heads and jewels appear well-preserved. Engravings for "OMEGA WATCH Co SWISS", "TWENTY-FOUR 24 JEWELS", the caliber number "562", and the matching serial number "18011828" are clearly legible. The timegrapher records +20+26s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The watch is paired with a brown leather strap in good condition. It is secured by a vintage gold-tone Omega-signed buckle, which shows heavy tarnish and plating wear consistent with its age.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The gold-tone upper case exhibits honest wear and moderate scratches, while the stainless steel caseback retains a sharply defined hippocampus medallion. The dial shows a light, attractive patina, though the handset displays significant oxidation and surface degradation. Visually, the movement is remarkably clean and well-preserved.
Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Seamaster offers a classic mid-century configuration with a date aperture at 3 o'clock. The presence of the highly regarded caliber 562 automatic movement and the deeply struck, crisp hippocampus caseback medallion make this a compelling and honest example of a mid-century favorite.
History
Introduced in 1948 to celebrate Omega's centenary, the Seamaster line quickly became a pillar of the brand's catalog, originally built upon the robust designs of military watches supplied during the Second World War. By the early 1960s, the collection had evolved into a refined everyday timepiece. References like the 14763 represent standard, high-quality production for the era, utilizing Omega's excellent 500-series automatic calibers. The addition of the hippocampus medallion on the caseback in the late 1950s became a defining feature of the model, marking it as a true classic of mid-century watchmaking.
