Dial and Hands
The silver dial features a highly attractive vertical brushed finish that plays beautifully with the light. Applied steel indices with black inserts provide sharp contrast, while the luminous dots at their outer edges have aged to a warm, inviting tone. A framed date window sits neatly at the three o'clock position. Under magnification, minor surface spotting is visible, adding honest vintage character to the display. The original dauphine-style hands, also featuring black inserts, display noticeable but honest age-related oxidation and spotting on their metal surfaces, with the luminous material having darkened appropriately over the decades.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case is in excellent preserved condition, featuring a smooth polished bezel and brushed flanks. Its geometry remains strong, with the lug chamfers still well-defined and crisp. Wear is limited to light surface and hairline scratches consistent with careful use over the years, with no major dents or deep dings visible. The watch retains its original scalloped-style crown, clearly signed with the Omega logo and showing good definition on the knurling. The caseback is distinguished by a deeply engraved Seamaster hippocampus logo. A domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, remaining generally clear with only minor superficial wear.
Movement
Inside is the reliable Omega caliber 562 automatic movement, featuring 24 jewels. The signature copper-colored plating remains bright and well-preserved, and the movement appears visually clean throughout, with only minor tool marks visible on some screw heads. The timegrapher recorded +22+25s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady.
Strap
The timepiece is fitted with a high-quality brown leather strap featuring white contrast stitching. The strap appears to be in near-new condition and complements the warm tones of the dial beautifully.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The stainless steel case is remarkably crisp, retaining sharp lug chamfers alongside light surface scratches from careful wear. The vertically brushed silver dial is highly attractive, showing minor surface spotting visible under magnification, while the hands display noticeable oxidation and darkening of the luminous material. The domed acrylic crystal is clear with only superficial wear.
Dimensions
The case measures 34 mm in diameter (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Seamaster offers a superb combination of a highly attractive vertically brushed dial and an exceptionally sharp case. Retaining its original signed scalloped crown and distinct hippocampus caseback, it represents a well-preserved and honest example of mid-century Omega design.
History
Introduced in 1948 to celebrate Omega's 100th anniversary, the Seamaster line was born from the brand's experience producing robust watches for the British military during the Second World War. By the early 1960s, the Seamaster had evolved into a refined yet durable everyday timepiece, striking a perfect balance between dress elegance and sporting capability. Models from this era, particularly those powered by the respected 500-series automatic calibers like the 562, are highly regarded by collectors for their reliable engineering and enduring mid-century aesthetic.
