Dial and Hands
The watch features a striking silver sunburst dial that remains in exceptionally clean condition, demonstrating a brilliant light-catching texture. Applied gold-tone faceted baton indices provide excellent depth, complemented by the applied Citizen logo and the signature polished 7 shield emblem positioned directly above six o'clock. A distinct faceted gold-tone frame houses the day complication at twelve o'clock, mirroring the framed date aperture at three o'clock. The gold-tone dauphine hands are sharp and well-preserved. Close inspection reveals only very faint signs of aging along the extreme outer edges near the minute track, with the dial surface remaining beautifully free of heavy spots, moisture stains, or significant damage.
Case and Crystal
The 37 mm case is crafted from Citizen Gold Plated stainless steel, distinguished by an attractive fluted bezel that captures the light beautifully. The case retains strong lines with defined transitions between the brushed upper lugs and polished case flanks. Honest vintage wear is visible throughout, including localized plating wear, light surface scratches, and natural oxidation on the case sides and the unmarked crown. The stainless steel screw-down caseback features crisp, deeply engraved factory markings including the Crystal Seven shield, serial numbers, and the Para Water designation. The watch is fitted with a domed crystal that exhibits light surface scuffs and minor scratches along the periphery, entirely consistent with its vintage pedigree.
Movement
Inside beats the Citizen caliber 5203, a sophisticated 27-jewel automatic movement. The rhodium-plated movement components and rotor are cleanly finished and display crisp red enamel engravings highlighting the jewel count. The caliber stamping is clearly visible on the base plate near the balance assembly. Running in vintage operational condition. Maintains the authentic mechanical character of the era, recording +50 to +55 s/d on the timegrapher.
Strap
The timepiece is paired with a period-correct dark brown leather strap featuring an embossed crocodile grain pattern and striking red contrast stitching. The strap is secured with a matching gold-tone pin buckle and exhibits minimal signs of wear, perfectly complementing the gold tones of the case and dial.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The watch presents a highly attractive, clean dial paired with a case that shows honest, age-appropriate wear and natural oxidation to the gold plating. The fluted bezel remains well-defined, and the overall aesthetic is incredibly charming for a mid-century dress watch.
Dimensions
The case measures 37 mm in diameter excluding the crown, providing a substantial and highly wearable presence that translates perfectly to modern wrist preferences.
Remarks
This Citizen Crystal Seven is a fantastic representation of vintage Japanese watchmaking, blending a high-jewel count automatic movement with a sophisticated day-date display. The combination of the fluted bezel and the pristine sunburst dial makes it a versatile and historically significant addition to any vintage collection.
History
Introduced in 1965, the Citizen Crystal Seven was a landmark release for the brand, proudly holding the title of the world's thinnest automatic watch with a day and date display at the time of its launch. It was also notable for being one of the first domestic Japanese watches to utilize a hardened mineral crystal, a feature that gave the collection its name. The Crystal Seven line quickly became a massive success, praised for its reliability, high jewel counts, and elegant aesthetics, cementing Citizen's reputation as a formidable innovator in the global watch industry.
