    About This Watch

Now available at auction from Second Vintage This sought-after 1964 Citizen Alarm Date presents a highly collectible mechanical alarm complication wrapped in a classic dual-crown design. Highlighted by an exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial and the distinctive '4H' four-hand layout, this timepiece offers a fascinating and functional piece of mid-century Japanese watchmaking. Brand: Citizen Model: Alarm Date Reference Number: ALD15701 Serial Number: 40900045 Movement: Manual wind alarm, 21 jewels Dial: Silver sunburst with applied gold-tone faceted indices and dedicated alarm hand Case Size: 37 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Gold-plated, stainless steel caseback Production Year: 1964 Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -11-15s/day, performing remarkably well. Dial and Hands The silver sunburst dial is exceptionally clean and beautifully preserved, offering a sharp and bright appearance. Applied gold-tone faceted indices are fully intact, complementing the crisp printed text that proudly displays the "Citizen Alarm Date", "21 jewels", and "Parashock" branding. The date window at 3 o'clock remains clean and easily legible. The original gold-tone dauphine hour and minute hands show visible age-consistent oxidation and spotting, as does the short arrow alarm hand. The sweep second hand remains fully intact. Case and Crystal The 37 mm gold-plated case showcases classic dual-crown geometry and honest vintage wear. There are visible surface scratches and handling marks throughout, alongside tarnishing and plating wear that is most notable on the underside edges and near the stainless steel caseback. The lugs show moderate wear but retain their general shape. An integrated gold-tone bezel frames the dial, displaying light scratches consistent with the rest of the case. The watch features unsigned dual crowns positioned at 2 and 4 o'clock, both showing moderate wear and some tarnish within their fluting. The domed acrylic crystal is clear, with no major scratches, cracks, or crazing visible. Movement Powering the watch is a 21-jewel manual wind alarm movement. The plates and bridges show minor surface scratches and light wear, with no severe corrosion or damage visible. Engravings for "CITIZEN" and "21J." are clearly marked on the movement. Recording -11-15s/day on the timegrapher, the caliber is exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. Strap The watch is fitted with a modern black leather strap featuring an alligator pattern and white contrast stitching. Secured by a stainless steel deployant clasp, the strap appears lightly used or new, remaining in excellent condition. Condition Good vintage condition. The watch balances a remarkably clean dial with the honest, age-related patina of its gold-plated case. While the dial is exceptionally sharp, the case exhibits visible surface scratches, tarnishing, and plating wear along the underside edges. The original hands display expected surface oxidation. The acrylic crystal is clear, and supported by the timegrapher results, the manual wind movement is performing very strongly. Dimensions The case size is 37 mm (excluding the crown). Remarks This Citizen Alarm Date is a compelling find for collectors of vintage mechanical alarms. The sharp silver sunburst dial provides a beautiful contrast to the honest patina of the case, while the dual-crown functionality remains a highly engaging feature. It is a distinctive and sought-after alternative to the more common alarm watches of the era. History Vintage mechanical alarm watches occupy a special place in horology, offering a highly interactive and practical complication. The Citizen Alarm Date models are particularly sought-after, often seen as a refined and less common alternative to the Seiko Bell-Matic. This model utilizes a clever dual-crown system: the crown at 2 o'clock winds and sets the alarm, while the crown at 4 o'clock winds the mainspring and sets the time. The '4H' designation associated with these models indicates the presence of four hands on the dial, with the distinctive short arrow hand dedicated specifically to setting the alarm time. Together with Citizen's proprietary Parashock shock resistance, this 1964 example represents a proud era of Japanese mechanical ingenuity.
