Dial and Hands
The dial is a captivating, deep glossy black, presenting a clean surface with mild, even aging throughout and some scattered age points typical for its era. It features applied silver-toned faceted baton indices that catch the light nicely, complemented by the applied Omega logo at twelve o'clock and the classic Seamaster script at six o'clock. The original dauphine hands exhibit honest, age-consistent patina with visible surface oxidation, contributing vintage character without overpowering the overall look. Small, evenly aged lume plots rest at the outer edge of the indices, matching the warm tone found on the hands. A framed date window sits at the three o'clock position, bordered by crisp white text reading Swiss Made at the very bottom.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features the celebrated thick lug profile that gives these early Seamasters a substantial presence on the wrist. The case retains strong lines and thick lugs, showing honest, light surface wear consistent with careful use over the decades. The polished bezel transitions smoothly into the brushed elements of the case sides. The watch is fitted with a domed crystal that remains clear and free of significant visual obstructions. The screw-down caseback proudly displays a deeply embossed Hippocampus medallion, remaining crisp, highly textured, and well-defined. The watch is completed by its signature scalloped Omega crown.
Movement
Inside beats the beautiful copper-toned Omega Caliber 562 automatic movement, a twenty-four jewel mechanism renowned for its durability and precision. The movement presents exceptionally well, with bright plating, clean bridges, and a swan neck regulator. Close inspection of the macro images reveals the serial number 19055568 and the 562 caliber stamp clearly engraved on the plates, alongside the engine-turned perlage on the inside of the caseback. The movement is very healthy and currently records a timegrapher result of -5 to -8 seconds per day with strong amplitude, which indicates excellent performance for a vintage watch.
Strap
The watch is paired with a premium black leather strap featuring prominent white contrast stitching and a burgundy backing. The strap is supple, showing minimal wear, and is secured by a classic stainless steel pin buckle, perfectly complementing the sporty yet elegant nature of the watch.
Condition
Very good vintage condition. The highly desirable black dial is well-preserved, maintaining much of its glossy finish with visible but even patina and some minor aging throughout, particularly on the hands. The stainless steel case remains robust with sharp details on the caseback medallion and normal surface scratches expected for its age. The movement is remarkably clean and performs excellently on the timegrapher, running within vintage tolerances.
Dimensions
The watch case measures 34 mm in diameter excluding the crown, providing a classic and highly wearable vintage profile that sits comfortably on the wrist.
Remarks
This Seamaster represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire a highly coveted black dial variation of one of the most respected vintage dress watches in the world. The combination of the deep black dial, dauphine hands, and robust steel case makes this an incredibly versatile piece suitable for both formal occasions and daily wear.
History
Introduced in 1948 to celebrate Omega's centenary, the Seamaster line was born from the brand's experience producing rugged, water-resistant watches for the British military during the Second World War. By the early 1960s, the Seamaster had evolved into a refined yet durable timepiece, favored by professionals and adventurers alike. The addition of the date complication and the highly reliable Caliber 562 movement further solidified its status as an everyday companion. The embossed Hippocampus logo on the caseback, inspired by the seahorses on the gondolas of Venice, remains an enduring symbol of Omega's maritime heritage and commitment to water-resistant engineering.
