The silver sunburst dial is a masterclass in mid-century restraint, radiating beautifully from the center and presenting in stunning vintage condition. It features applied gold-tone faceted baton indices, with a prominent double-baton marker at the twelve o'clock position. The dial furniture includes a sharply framed date window at three o'clock. The typography is elegantly executed, with the stylized cursive "Citizen Jet Auto Dater" below twelve o'clock and "21 Jewels Parashock phynox" printed above the six o'clock position. The dial surface is remarkably clean, showing minimal signs of aging and no notable spotting or moisture damage. The gold-tone dauphine hands exhibit honest, age-consistent oxidation and light patina, perfectly complementing the overall vintage character of the timepiece.
Case and Crystal
The 38mm gold-plated case features an elegant profile with sweeping lugs that retain good definition, showing normal, honest micro-scratching and light wear consistent with careful use over the decades. The transition between the case flanks and the bezel remains structurally sound, without heavy over-polishing. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal that sits proud of the bezel, providing excellent clarity to the dial beneath with no severe scratches or impacts visible. The stainless steel snap-on caseback is clearly engraved with "C.G.P. STAR", "Citizen Jet Rookie", and the reference JR515301, while the interior is stamped with the serial number 30601559.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the highly collectible Citizen Jet automatic movement, instantly recognizable by its unique geared outer-ring rotor. The movement is clearly signed "CITIZEN JET AUTODATER" and "TWENTY ONE 21 JEWELS" across the winding mechanism. The intricate inner workings, including the exposed gears and ruby jewels, present cleanly in the detailed inspection. Running in vintage operational condition. Maintains the authentic mechanical character of the era. The timegrapher results indicate a performance of +40 to +48 seconds per day.
Strap
The watch is paired with a dark brown leather strap, featuring striking yellow contrast stitching that subtly echoes the gold tones of the case and dial furniture. The strap is secured with a classic gold-tone pin buckle.
Condition
This Citizen Jet Auto Dater Rookie survives in excellent vintage condition. The dial is exceptionally well-preserved, standing out as a premium highlight of the watch. The gold-plated case shows expected, honest signs of wear without detracting from its overall elegant presence. The distinctive movement remains visually clean and mechanically operational.
Dimensions
The case measures a contemporary 38 mm in diameter, excluding the crown, offering substantial wrist presence for a vintage dress watch while maintaining a refined, slim profile.
Remarks
It is increasingly uncommon to find Citizen Jet models with dials in such pristine condition. The combination of the visually captivating outer-rotor movement, the elegant dial layout, and the robust 38mm case size makes this a highly desirable acquisition for enthusiasts of innovative vintage Japanese watchmaking.
History
Introduced in the early 1960s, the Citizen Jet series was a direct response to the era's demand for thinner automatic watches. Instead of a traditional centrally mounted oscillating weight, Citizen engineered a large, ring-shaped rotor that rotated around the periphery of the movement on a track of ruby bearings. This not only allowed the movement to be flatter but also produced a distinctive, slightly whirring sound on the wrist. The "Rookie" designation was often applied to specific sub-lines within the Jet family, making this a fascinating and historically significant chapter in Citizen's rich heritage of mechanical innovation.
