Dial and Hands
The dial is the standout feature of this timepiece, presenting a deep blue hue that shifts in tone depending on the lighting. It is protected by a striking original faceted mineral crystal that creates a prismatic effect, enhancing the visual depth of the face. The dial features a gold applied "LM" logo and "Special" text, signifying its elevated status. The silver applied baton indices and hands are sharp and free from corrosion, maintaining a high level of legibility. A framed day-date window is positioned at three o'clock, featuring a bilingual calendar wheel with Kanji and English options.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features the sharp geometric lines characteristic of Seiko's "Grammar of Design" era, combining brushed upper surfaces with polished sides. The faceted crystal is in remarkable condition, preserving the distinct edges that give this model its unique character. The case retains its original definition with crisp edges, showing only minor signs of handling consistent with careful preservation. The crown is original and sits flush against the case side.
Movement
Powering this watch is the highly regarded Caliber 5216A automatic movement, a 25-jewel high-grade engine that serves as the foundation for the historic 4S series movements. It features automatic winding, hand-winding capability, and a hacking seconds function. Testing on a timegrapher reveals a daily rate of approximately -82 to -86 seconds per day, indicating a complete and active mechanical movement. Could benefit from adjustment.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original stainless steel bracelet, featuring a complex link design that complements the faceted case geometry. The clasp is signed with the "LM" logo, ensuring authenticity and completing the collector-grade package. The bracelet is sized to fit a wrist of approximately 17.5cm.
Condition
This timepiece is in excellent vintage condition. The case edges remain sharp, and the brushing on the lugs is distinct. The dial is flawless, free from spotting or moisture damage, and the unique faceted crystal is clean. The movement is running and functional, presenting an honest vintage mechanical state.
Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm in diameter excluding the crown, offering a classic vintage proportion that sits comfortably on the wrist. The faceted crystal adds a unique profile height that catches the light dynamically from every angle.
Remarks
The Lord Matic Special 5216-7090 is a coveted reference among Seiko enthusiasts due to its combination of the high-beat base 52 series movement and the exuberant 1970s styling. Finding an example with the faceted crystal intact and the original bracelet present is becoming increasingly difficult. This watch offers a distinct aesthetic that captures the creativity of 1970s Japan while providing the mechanical reliability of a Daini Seikosha movement.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s and running through the 1970s, the Lord Matic (LM) line was positioned just below King Seiko and Grand Seiko, offering high-quality automatic movements in sophisticated cases. The "Special" line, introduced later, utilized the 5200 series movements manufactured by the Daini factory. These movements were technically advanced, running at higher frequencies and built to such high standards that Seiko resurrected the architecture in the 1990s for their high-end 4S mechanical lines. This 1974 example represents the peak of the LM range.
