Dial and Hands
The dial is an absolute standout, featuring a rich, radiant cherry red surface with an underlying sunburst finish that catches the light beautifully. The applied silver-tone faceted baton indices provide a sharp contrast against the vibrant backdrop, complemented by the applied Seiko logo at twelve o'clock. The classic serif typography of the Skyliner script and the Suwa factory logo are crisply printed in white above the six o'clock marker. Upon close inspection, the dial remains in near-mint condition, entirely free of spotting, staining, or moisture damage, which is quite rare for colored dials of this era. The elegant, faceted silver-tone dauphine hands are equally well preserved, showing sharp edges and a brilliant polish without any signs of oxidation.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case measures a substantial 37 mm and retains its sharp, factory-intended architecture. The lugs exhibit crisp, well-defined chamfers and a beautiful transition between the brushed upper surfaces and the polished flanks. The polished smooth bezel is clean and distinct, framing the dial perfectly. Honest, light surface wear is visible under close examination, consistent with careful vintage use, but there are no deep scratches or signs of heavy polishing. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal that offers excellent clarity, free of any significant scuffs or crazing, allowing an unobstructed view of the vibrant dial beneath. The polished caseback clearly displays the reference number 6100-8000 and the serial number 188827.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko Caliber 61A, a robust and reliable manual wind movement featuring 21 jewels. The close-up images reveal a clean and well-maintained mechanism, with crisp red enamel filling the caliber and jewel count engravings on the bridges. The movement components show honest vintage character without any signs of excessive moisture or mishandling. Running in vintage operational condition. Maintains the authentic mechanical character of the era. The timegrapher results reflect a performance of -49 to -53 seconds per day.
Strap
The watch is presented on an original Seiko stainless steel multi-link bracelet. The links show a handsome combination of brushed and polished finishes that echo the case design. The folding clasp is proudly stamped with the Seiko signature. The bracelet remains in good condition with minor stretch typical of its age, comfortably accommodating a wrist size of up to 18 cm.
Condition
This Skyliner is in excellent vintage condition overall. The dial is exceptionally preserved, standing out as a premier feature of this watch. The case retains its sharp, original geometry with only light, age-appropriate handling marks. The movement is clean and operational, and the original signed bracelet completes this highly collectible package.
Dimensions
Case width measures 37 mm excluding the crown. The bracelet is sized to fit a wrist of approximately 18 cm.
Remarks
Finding a vintage Seiko Skyliner with such a pristine and brightly colored dial is a rare occurrence. The combination of the striking red sunburst finish, the sharp case lines, and the reliable manual wind movement makes this a highly versatile and attractive piece for any vintage enthusiast.
History
The Seiko Skyliner series was introduced in the 1960s as a sleek, manual wind alternative to the brand's automatic offerings. Positioned as a refined dress watch, the Skyliner utilized reliable, thin calibers to achieve a sophisticated profile on the wrist. Over the years, these models have become highly sought after by collectors who appreciate Seiko's mid-century design language, characterized by sharp cases, elegant dials, and robust in-house manufacturing.
