Dial and Hands
The silver-tone dial exhibits a heavy, uniform spotting and patina, often referred to as freckling or a stardust effect, across its entire surface, giving the watch a deeply individualized character. The applied faceted indices feature black inserts that remain fully intact, matching the stick hands perfectly. The applied Omega logo and the signature Constellation star are present and well-defined, while the printed text remains clearly legible despite the heavy surface degradation. The hands show minor oxidation and light surface wear visible under magnification, with the sweep second hand appearing straight and well-preserved.
Case and Crystal
The classic C-shape case features brushed upper surfaces contrasting with polished flanks. The case edges show some softening from previous polishing and normal wear, with light surface scratches and minor dings visible on the polished sides and bezel area. The caseback retains a well-preserved gold-tone observatory medallion with visible stars, a defining feature of the Constellation line. The knurled crown is signed with the Omega logo and shows moderate wear to the knurling and logo relief. The domed acrylic crystal shows light surface scratches and minor scuffs consistent with normal use, with no major cracks or deep chips.
Movement
Inside is the copper-colored Omega caliber 564 automatic movement, featuring 24 jewels and adjusted to five positions and temperature. The surfaces, bridges, and rotor appear very clean with bright finishing, showing no obvious signs of corrosion, heavy oxidation, or damaged screw heads. The swan neck regulator is present and intact. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. The timegrapher records a rate of -6-9s/day.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring an alligator or crocodile pattern embossing. It shows light creasing and signs of gentle use, presenting as a lightly used strap with plenty of remaining life.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The dial is heavily patinated with a uniform spotting that many collectors appreciate for its unique visual texture. The stainless steel case displays honest wear, with some softening to the edges and light scratches, but preserves its overall C-shape geometry and the important gold-tone caseback medallion. The acrylic crystal has minor scuffs from typical wear, while the movement remains visually excellent and exceptionally clean.
Dimensions
The case measures 34mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This Constellation offers a compelling combination of Gérald Genta's distinctive C-case design and a chronometer-grade caliber 564 movement. The heavy, uniform dial patina provides a striking aesthetic, making this a highly individual example of a respected 1960s reference.
History
The Omega Constellation reference 168.017 features the distinctive C-shape case design, which was originally conceived by the renowned watch designer Gérald Genta. This design language became a defining aesthetic for the Constellation line during the late 1960s. The watch is powered by the Caliber 564 movement, which utilizes a straight-line lever escapement, a shock absorber, a self-compensating flat balance spring, and a micrometer regulator. Notably, the Caliber 564 also features a practical quick-set date mechanism, adding technical convenience to its chronometer-certified precision.
